    • The invention relates to a power supply and control unit for a light system, especially an airport approach light system, for making a number of lights go on and out as a progressive light front. The invention is also concerned with a lighting unit (1) suitable for use in combination with this power supply and control unit. To minimize the need for cable laying especially for the light system, the power supply and control unit comprises means (2) for generating clock pulses (b) occurring at a frequency proportional to the rate of progression of the light front; means (3) for generating a control signal (c) comprising recurrent sequences containing a predetermined number of control pulses corresponding to the frequency of the clock pulses and a subsequent portion comprising no control pulses and having a duration equal to one or more cycle times corresponding to the frequency of the clock pulses; and a power stage (4) which is arranged to receive the control signal (c) and a supply (s) from a source of power and to generate at its output voltage pulses (v) in response to the control pulses of the control signal on the basis of said control signal and supply.

    • The actuator is connected in series between the power supply and the flashing light. It includes a switch which is connected in series between the power supply and the flashing light so that when the switch is closed the light turns on and when the switch is open the light is turned off. A comparator controls the opening and closing of the switch at a frequency determined by an RC timer. Also, the duty cycle of the flashing light is controlled by the timer. A current overload protector lowers the duty cycle of the flashing light as the magnitude of the overload is increased and, in the event of a short circuit, decreases the duty cycle to approximately zero.

    • A hand-held pulsed-light generator is presented for temporarily blinding and assailant at a distance. The light generator comprises a high energy storage capacitor, charged by high voltage power supply, and a high intensity flashtube. A high current electronic switch discharges the capacitor through the flashtube thereby generating an intense flash of light. The flash is focused by a reflector to form a concentrated beam pulse which is aimed at an assailant's head. The intensity of the pulsed-light beam striking the eyes is sufficiently strong to cause temporary blindness, thereby rendering the assailant immobile. By using a discharge capacitor with very high energy storage, and an ultra high intensity flashtube, and a focusing reflector for concentrating the light, it is possible to project a light flash that is several orders of magnitude brighter than the sun. As soon as the capacitor is discharged by generating one light flash, it is automatically recharged a few seconds later for projecting another flash. Rapid fire of several flashes with time intervals of a small fraction of a second is obtained by utilizing a plurality of capacitors, and discharging them serially through the flashtube.

    • An apparatus for use with an electrical lamp to control the electrical energy from a source of electrical power to the lamp to simulate the emission of a flame, the apparatus including an intensity controller section having first and second manually adjustable signal generating devices, the first being settable to the desired average brightness of the lamp, and the second being settable to a desired "flicker intensity". The flicker is effected by means of circuitry effectively providing a modulation about the value of the first signal. The magnitude of "flickering" may be reduced to zero permitting un-modulated full range light dimming control. A phase-angle controllable switching device in circuit relation with the lamp is actuated by a gate circuit within the circuitry. One or more lamps may be employed. The apparatus is modular to accommodate the flame simulation effect on a plurality of lamps or a plurality of sets of lamps with single point master control over independently "flickering" lighting circuits. A novel multiple filament lamp for use in simulating the motion of flame has at least two filaments angularly disposed relative to each other within an envelope, with each filament independently energizable. An alternate embodiment of the lamp includes a third filament within a colored glass envelope with the two filaments being intermediate the colored glass envelope and the primary envelope.

    • A flasher unit for buoys, beacons and the like for flashing an incandescent lamp in a required sequence of short and long flashes having short or long eclipses between flashes. A counter is provided having a number of counts equal to the number of flash-eclipse pairs required. A timing pulse generator is selectively controlled to produce timing pulses during each count that are temporally spaced in accordance with the flash-eclipse time durations during each count. Certain ones of the timing pulses serve to clock the counter. Lamp control pulses are generated during each count for energizing the lamp for the preselected time duration. A sync pulse is generated at the beginning of every flash and a second pulse during the first flash in a sequence. These pulses are externally available and are communicated to other flasher units for synchronization. The unit will also synchronize to incoming sync pulses. A photocell circuit inhibits flashing during daylight periods.
