    • A method and apparatus for separating background events from valid sample events in a liquid scintillation counter are disclosed. Upon the detection of a coincident event pulse the number of pulses detected during a short time interval immediately thereafter together with the energy level of the event pulse is utilized to determine the probability that the event pulse is a valid sample pulse as opposed to an invalid background pulse. The total count rate is determined by summing pulses over the appropriate energy range where each pulse is counted as one multiplied by the above probability that the pulse is a valid sample pulse.

    • A method of measuring the disintegration rate of a beta-emitting radionuclide in a liquid sample by counting at least two differently quenched versions of the sample. In each counting operation the sample is counted in the presence of and in the absence of a standard radioactive source. A pulse height (PH) corresponding to a unique point on the pulse height spectrum generated in the presence of the standard is determined. A zero threshold sample count rate (CPM) is derived by counting the sample once in a counting window having a zero threshold lower limit. Normalized values of the measured pulse heights (PH) are developed and correlated with the corresponding pulse counts (CPM) to determine the pulse count for a normalized pulse height value of zero and hence the sample disintegration rate.

    • A new scintillator, di-m-methylphenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole, or 2,5-di-m-tolyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole, is prepared by reacting m-toluoyl chloride with hydrazine to form di-m-toluoyl hydrazine which, in turn, is reacted with thionyl chloride to form the desired product. The scintillator, di-m-methylphenyloxadiazole compares favorably with present commercial products, being equal to or better than diphenyloxazole in most important respects and significantly superior in scintillation pulse height and in stability. It can be produced at a fraction of the cost of today's most widely used product.

    • A method and apparatus for concurrently counting a plurality of radioactive samples. The position sensitive circuitry of a scintillation camera is employed to sort electrical pulses resulting from scintillations according to the geometrical locations of scintillations causing those pulses. A scintillation means, in the form of a scintillating crystal material or a liquid scintillator, is positioned proximate to an array of radioactive samples. Improvement in the accuracy of pulse classification may be obtained by employing collimating means. If a plurality of scintillation crystals are employed to measure the iodine-125 content of samples, a method and means are provided for correcting for variations in crystal light transmission properties, sample volume, and sample container radiation absorption.
