    • An adaptive statistical filter system for receiving a data stream compris a series of data values from a sensor associated with successive points in time. Each data value includes a data component representative of the motion of a target and a noise component, with the noise components of data values associated with proximate points in time being correlated. The adaptive statistical filter system includes a prewhitener, a plurality of statistical filters of different orders, stochastic decorrelator and a selector. The prewhitener generates a corrected data stream comprising corrected data values, each including a data component and a time-correlated noise component. The plural statistical filters receive the corrected data stream and generate coefficient values to fit the corrected data stream to a polynomial of corresponding order and fit values representative of the degree of fit of corrected data stream to the polynomial. The stochastic decorrelator uses a spatial Poisson process statistical significance test to determine whether the fit values are correlated. If the test indicates the fit values are not randomly distributed, it generates decorrelated fit values using an autoregressive moving average methodology which assesses the noise components of the statistical filter. The selector receives the decorrelated fit values and coefficient values from the plural statistical filters and selects coefficient values from one of the filters in response to the decorrelated fit values. The coefficient values are coupled to a target motion analysis module which determines position and velocity of a target.

    • A phase shift keyed (PSK) pulse synthesizer which is part of an acoustic transmitter located in an underwater vehicle to provide identification and tracking of the vehicle as well as telemetry data when used on an instrumented underwater tracking range. The synthesizer is synchronized with the range time standard and generates phase coded pulses in a format suitable for input to an amplifier. A timing circuit divides a high frequency clock to produce square wave outputs at the desired frequency. A programmed read only memory (PROM) contains the identification code and is addressed from the timing circuit. A phase shift modulator combines the desired frequency with signals from the PROM and from a telemetry data generator to provide the amplifier with a digital analog of the desired acoustic message to be transmitted.

    • A survey ship proceeds along a desired track as determined by precision navigational aids. A doppler sonar is programmed to receive returns from various water masses circulating at various depths between the ship and the water bottom. The doppler sonar scans the different depths by changing the signal return-time window. The ship's track resolved with the water-current velocity components to obtain a resolved water current vector. The doppler sonar may be an integral part of the navigation system. In such a case, the doppler sonar will be commanded to lock on the water bottom at selected intervals to determine the true ship's track and at other intervals, the sonar will track one or more water masses. Alternatively, two sonar signal receivers may be used, one to continuously track the water bottom and one to scan the water masses at various depths.
