    • A static seal is utilized to provide a fluid boundary in place of a dynamiceal during underwater storage. The static seal is formed by an O-ring disposed between a threaded collar and retainer. The collar is held in alignment with a shaft by means of slots so that the collar rotates with the shaft in either rotational direction but is capable of moving independent of the shaft in the axial direction. The collar is threaded to the retainer by turning the collar with respect to the retainer in a clockwise direction. This forms the O-ring static seal permitting underwater storage of an underwater vehicle for an extended period of time. Following storage the operation of the shaft in a counter-clockwise direction disengages the collar from the retainer thereby releasing the static seal so that the dynamic seal comes into utilization.

    • In a rotodynamic pump intended for operation at high pressures e.g. 2000 p.s.i. and for pumping contaminated fluids e.g. corrosive water, high pressure sealing assemblies are provided at the through-openings in the pump casing for the pump shaft. Each assembly includes a pair of axially spaced mechanical seals, and each seal comprises a rotor portion fixed to the pump shaft and a stator portion axially movable into sealing engagement with the rotor portion, the stators being located intermediate the rotor portions. A busing is located between the seals and includes conduits supplying oil at a pressure above pump pressure to the innermost seal whence the oil is reduced in pressure and passed to the outermost seal, so that oil is delivered to the facing ends of the stators. The oil serves for lubrication of the sealing interfaces and for the prevention of egress of contaminated material through said innermost seal.

    • A sealing arrangement for a rotary regenerative air preheater that precludes the leakage of gas or air through the clearance space between a cylindrical rotor shaft and an end plate of a relatively fixed surrounding housing structure. The sealing arrangement includes an annular flange concentrically fixed at one end to the rotor shaft and adapted to extend into spaced relation with the housing structure to provide a clearance space therebetween. The clearance space is adapted to carry a plurality of discrete bands of packing material with a pressurized air seal therebetween to resist the flow of fluid therethrough, while the annular flange is subjected to wear and attrition that would otherwise be imposed upon the rotor post.

    • An oil seal capable of pumping oil lying on a shaft or like member axially of the shaft upon rotation thereof into the sealed region. In a preferred form, the seal includes an elastomeric body having a primary lip and a plurality of individual pumping elements, an auxiliary lip which extends between elements. In the preferred form, the pumping elements are of wedge-like form and are being radially spaced relative to one another and thereby adapted for successive operative engagement with an associated shaft or other relatively movable element only after a certain amount of wear has taken place with respect to certain of the other of the elements. The auxiliary lip ordinarily lies in a plane parallel to the primary lip. In the use of the preferred form of seal, as the elements lying closer to the movable element wear and become less effective to pump oil, other of the elements will inherently be brought into cooperative working engagement with the movable element in order to provide continued pumping action throughout an extended life of the seal unit. The secondary or auxiliary lip restrains fluid from passing axially too far away from the primary lip and prevents oil from collecting on the elements. The auxiliary lip concept may also be applied to seals having other forms of pumping elements. The mold core and method of making it are also described.
