    • A two-piece piston composed of independent head and skirt portions, wherein the skirt portion is mounted by means of a wrist pin on bosses located on the lower end of members pending from the head portion, the head portion being provided with an annular recess between the combustion bowl and the ring zone, and the skirt provided with a tray on its upper end, the annular recess and the tray defining a semi-open cooling chamber.     • A hydraulically-operated piston machine includes at least one cylinder and a piston axially movably guided in the cylinder. The piston is connected to a crankshaft or the like by means of a connecting rod. The connecting rod and the piston each have spherically-shaped bearing surfaces serving for connecting the connecting rod and the piston with each other in an articulated manner. The connecting rod defines at its end connected to the piston a radially outwardly facing spherical surface portion which is arranged concentrically with the spherical bearing surface of the connecting rod. The spherical surface portion rests against the surface of a recess defined in the piston, so that a hollow space is defined between the surface of the recess and the spherical surface portion. The piston defines a bore for effecting communication of fluids between the interior of the cylinder and the hollow space.

    • A compression linkage is disclosed for use between a first swivel pin having a first thermal expansion characteristic and a second swivel pin of a second and differing thermal expansion characteristic, comprising: (a) a first shaft comprised of substantially the same material as the first pin and having a mateable end and another end adapted for swivel connection to said first pin; (b) a second shaft comprised of substantially the same material as the second pin and having a mateable end and another end adapted for swivel connection to said second pin; and (c) means providing a rigid compression joint between the mateable ends of said first and second shafts. Preferably, the first pin is adapted to operate in a high temperature environment, such as 400.degree.-500.degree. F., and is comprised of a ceramic effective to have a flexural strength of at least 100,000 psi (500 MPa) in such temperature range. The material for the second pin is preferably comprised of metal having a tensile strength of at least 550 MPa and a coefficient of thermal expansion in the range of 8-20 ppm/.degree. K. The metal may be selected from the group consisting of high carbon steel and sintered powdered metal.

    • An improved heat insulated piston assembly for an internal combustion engine and a method of assembly. The improved piston assembly includes a piston constructed of a sleeve having an interference fit about a heat insulated core. The core has a first end positioned flush with an end of the sleeve and has a second end located within the sleeve with a concave configured cavity formed therein. Mating in the concave configured cavity of the core is a connecting rod having a spherical ball shaped end. The spherical ball shaped end is securely held in the cavity by a retaining ring which attaches to the piston sleeve. The retaining ring allows for limited movement of the spherical ball shaped end of the connecting rod in the cavity while providing a means for returning the piston to its bottom position during the intake stroke.
