    • A portable workbench has a supporting structure defining a supporting surface. The supporting structure includes a collapsible leg assembly for supporting the supporting surface above a floor surface. A first top member having an upper surface is supported by the supporting structure on the supporting surface. A second top member likewise has an upper surface and the upper surfaces lie in a substantially horizontal plane. The top members also have respective mutually adjacent side walls defining clamping surfaces. A guiding structure is provided for guiding the second top member relative to the supporting structure. The second top member can be moved along the guiding structure so as to adjust the position of the second top member with respect to the first top member. The guiding structure is pivotally mounted so that the second top member can be rotated from a first position on the supporting surface whereat the upper surfaces of the top members are in the same horizontal plane to a second position whereat the second top member is in a plane transverse to the above-mentioned horizontal plane so as to cause the clamping surfaces and the supporting surface to conjointly define a three point clamping system. In the first position, the portable workbench is suited for clamping workpieces having two surfaces that are substantially parallel to each other; whereas, in the second position, the portable workbench is especially suited to clamping workpieces having a cylindrical or polygonal shape such as, for example, a section of tubular conduit.

    • The apparatus includes a cradle for holding long tubes desired to be cut into individual tubes of shorter length. The cradle is generally cylindrical and mounted for rotation about its axis. Tubes are mounted in the cradle at a loading position, and a controller actuates a motor for driving the cradle inrotation to a cutting position. A plurality of saws are mounted on a shaft extending parallel with the axis of the cradle and rotating at high cutting speed. When the cradle is revolved to bring the tube to the cutting station, the tube is engaged by a surface belt drive to spin the tube in the cradle for cutting. In the case of tubes having greater wall thickness, the cradle is stopped momentarily just as the tubes are brought into cutting relation with the saws so that a partial peripheral cut is made while the cradle is stopped. The cradle is then continued to be rotated to complete the cut and to bring the cut tubes back to the original position at high speed.

    • The present invention relates to an indexing mechanism for stepwise advancing a workpiece relative to a cutting tool of a machine tool, to enable slices or wafers of predetermined thickness to be cut from the workpiece. The indexing mechanism comprises first and second slide blocks slidable in a slideway in a slide block carrier of the machine tool. The first block carries the workpiece and the second block carries a double-acting index actuator which interconnects the two blocks and is operable to displace the blocks alternately toward and away from each other, the extent of said displacement determining the indexing stroke of the mechanism. The index actuator is provided with an adjustable end stop for adjusting the indexing stroke. The blocks are provided with clamp actuators which positively and sequentially clamp the blocks to the carrier, so that the first block is displaced away from the second block as the latter is immobilized, and the second block is displaced towards the first block as the latter is immobilized. The blocks are also provided with springs which, upon release of the clamp actuator, clamp the blocks to the carrier with a reduced clamping force sufficient to resists unintentional displacement of the blocks.

    • The present invention concerns a new vise intended to be mounted on bias-cutting sawing machines, i.e., on circular saw machines for miter cutting metallic sections, utilizing pivotal movement of the saw and the holding device for the work piece. The holding device is supported by a pivotal frame movable about the vertical diametral axis of the saw. The invention is characterized by the fact that it provides means for the contact surfaces or jaw caps of the work holding device always to remain parallel to the axis of the work piece, regardless of the angle of orientation of the saw with respect to the work piece, such means being designed with the saw blade always passing as close as possible to the jaws of the vise.

    • A helical coil comprising a plurality of turns of bar stock is mounted on an expanding mandrel which is operated by a hydraulic cylinder or the like to expand the internal circumference of the coil against the resilient resistance thereof. A severing device is then employed to form a cut across the turns of the coil so as to sever each turn as a separate ring having a gap therein corresponding in width to the thickness of the severing device. The expanding mandrel is then released so as to allow the rings to spring back to their original circumference. In this way, the gap in each ring is closed. Each ring may then be flattened to remove the helical pitch so that the ring will be in a single plane with the severed ends of the ring aligned. The severed ends may be welded or otherwise joined. The disclosed machine preferably employs a rotary abrasive disc for forming the cut across the turns of the coil. The width of the cut corresponds to the thickness of the abrasive disc. The amount by which the coil is expanded preferably corresponds to the thickness of the abrasive disc so as to compensate for the width of the cut produced by the abrasive disc. The continuing abrasive action of the sides of the disc, as the cut progresses across the turns of the coil, prevents the disc from being pinched by the turns of the coil.
