    • A granule application device for use in making a shingle roofing product is provided. This device includes a sheet having a weather protected headlap area and having a weather exposed butt area which moves continuously from an upstream end to a downstream end. The device includes a blender applicator which dispenses blended butt granules on the sticky, asphalt treated, upper surface of the sheet for covering the butt area only. The device also includes a headlap applicator which dispenses less expensive headlap granules on the headlap area only. The device also includes a recycle applicator, which dispenses recycle granules over the blended granules on the butt area only, and dispenses scrap granules over the headlap area only. The moving sheet is supported on a talc drum and a slate drum near the downstream end, and is supported on a back roll near the upstream end thereof. The manual control of the dispensing of the less expensive headlap granules, and the overall arrangement, reduces the percentage of more expensive blended granules in the recycled granules, thereby minimizing the overall cost of the shingle roofing product.

    • A method of powder coating the inside of tubular goods, such as oilfield pipe and the like, by connecting one end of the pipe to a means for producing a flow of compressible gases therethrough. The other end of the pipe is open to atmospheric pressure. A valve means is connected for controlling the flow of air through the container which holds a single charge of plastic powder. The charge of powdered plastic is isolated upstream of the pipe inlet. The charge is of sufficient size to coat the entire inside peripheral wall surface of the pipe with a substantial uniform coating of plastic. The pipe is heated above the softening temperature of the plastic and axially rotated, so that when the valve is opened, air flows through the container, into the pipe, and establishes a pressure gradient across the entire length of the pipe. This action causes the captured charge of plastic to form a pocket of dispersed plastic particles which is forced to flow through the pipe by the air flow. The plastic particles are deposited and fused to the hot rotating inner surface of the pipe.

    • A method of recovering powder, for example in a powder-coating installation, uses processing plant adapted to operate at a pressure different to atmospheric pressure. Powder accumulating in a receptacle communicating with the processing plant is fluidized and a pressure head of fluidized powder is created to compensate the pressure difference imposed by the processing plant. A corresponding powder recovery device comprises processing plant adapted to operate at a pressure different to atmospheric pressure, a receptacle for the powder, a substantially vertical column through which this receptacle communicates with the processing plant, and structure for fluidizing at least the powder in this column. The processing plant may comprise a cyclone type separator, in which case the column is a pipe extending the cyclone downwardly. Alternatively, the processing plant may comprise a box having an air inlet and an air outlet and filters between the air inlet and the air outlet. In this case the column comprises a pipe coupled to the bottom of a hopper situated beneath the filters.

    • An apparatus for the manufacture of fibrous webs comprises a forming wire and a distributor for depositing dry fibers on the wire. The distributor comprises at least one cylindrical chamber having its axis extending transversely of and in a plane parallel to the wire. The lower semicylindrical wall of the chamber is perforate for distributing fibers on the wire and the upper semicylindrical wall includes a fiber inlet. A helically bladed rotor in the chamber has its axis substantially coincident with the chambers axis of curvature, and upon rotation operates to drive fibers through the screen while evenly distributing them across the wire. Disposition of a pair of chambers in tandem with a common central fiber inlet operates further to create a racetrack fiber distribution across the wire.
