摘要： A system and method which displays a graphical icon, such as a slider bar, on a subscriber's television or display unit for indexing to different positions in a video stream in an interactive video delivery system. The interactive video delivery system preferably comprises at least one media server which stores one or more video streams, and one or more subscribers which each include a display device, such as a television. The television displays a slider bar or other graphical icon, and the slider bar is used to index to different locations in the video stream. During video delivery, the user may use or adjust a knob on the slider bar, preferably using a remote control device, to indicate a desire to "jump" to a different location in the movie or video stream. The media server receives the slider bar user input from the subscriber device and begins outputting the normal play stream at the desired position.

摘要： The system includes at least one central processing unit (CPU) which is coupled through appropriate input/output (I/O) circuitry to input devices, such as a keyboard, digital pad, mouse and/or track ball. The CPU is coupled to a hard disk drive for the storage of programs and data, and may also be coupled to a network through which the CPU may communicate with a variety of other system resources and devices. The CPU is further coupled to a display device such as a CRT or liquid crystal display, on which the present invention is displayed. The user interface of the present invention includes an object oriented graphic user interface having overlapping windows. The present invention includes an access window having topics, index and look for button functions for selection by a user. Through the use of the topics, index or look for functions, a help inquiry is defined. The selection of one of the button functions results in the CPU generating and displaying entries in a predefined area of the access window. Upon the selection of one of the entries by a user, the CPU displays phrases related to the selected entry in a working area of the access window. The selection of one of the phrases results in the CPU displaying a presentation window on the display, which includes help instruction data to guide the user in the particular help task specified by the entry and phrase selection.

Other layered windows under the top most application window are inactive, and must be brought to the "top" of the stack immediately below the access or presentation window to be operated upon.

The operation of the mapping facility is initiated in response to the user entering an appropriate command. The user interface tool is referred to as a valuator menu, since it allows both the selection of a value from a range of values, and the selection of a menu item from a menu list. As a user moves a cursor over a menu of selectable items on a screen display, the item underneath the cursor is highlighted. In addition, as the user moves the cursor within the highlighted menu item, a value relative to the position of the cursor within that menu item is displayed. This valuator value is dynamically updated as the cursor position changes within the menu item. When the user performs an input selection, i.e. through a mouse button or a keyboard interaction, both the selected menu item and the value, relative to the cursor position, are simultaneously returned to the application program running on the data processing system.

This is performed through the use of a plurality of data access lines which provide data simultaneously to the two or more sub-screens such that the data can be simultaneously accessed and manipulated in more than one sub-screen such that each sub-screen actively supports data generated from a dedicated software program. Such invention may be implemented in customized encoded hardware or a combination of hardware and software.
