    • One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that wakes up a sleeping target system located on a target LAN (Local Area Network) from a remote system located on a remote LAN. Note that, since the sleeping target system is in a sleep state, it receives packets of a lower-layer protocol which cannot be used by the remote system to directly send packets to the sleeping target system. During operation, the remote system creates a wake-up packet. The remote system then uses a second protocol to send the wake-up packet to a relay agent located on the target LAN. Note that using the upper-layer protocol enables the remote system to communicate with the relay agent even though they are on different LANs. Upon receiving the first wake-up packet, the relay agent uses the lower-layer protocol to send a second wake-up packet to the sleeping target system, which causes the sleeping target system to wake up. Recall that the remote system cannot use the lower-layer protocol to send a wake-up packet directly to the sleeping target system because the remote system and the sleeping target system are on different LANs. The remote system overcomes this limitation by first sending a wake-up packet to the relay agent using the upper-layer protocol, which causes the relay agent to send another wake-up packet to the sleeping target system using the lower-layer protocol.

    • A pre-boot server address relay device relays packets from the diskless computing device to an address allocation server to discover available network addresses. The pre-boot server address relay device receives offer packets from the address allocation server offering a network address and generates modified packets by modifying each of the offer packets from the address allocation server. The modified packets are transmitted to the diskless computing device. The pre-boot server address relay device relays request packets from the diskless computing device to the address allocation server. The pre-boot server address relay device receives acknowledgment packets from the address allocation server acknowledging the request of the network address and generates modified acknowledgement packets by modifying the acknowledgment packets from the address allocation server. The pre-boot server address relay device transmits the modified acknowledgement packets to the diskless computing device to enable remote booting.

    • A method for conserving battery power in a wireless device coupled through an access point to a server in a network, the server being coupled to at least one client in the network, each of the wireless device, the at least one client, and the access point having a respective hardware address, the method comprising: receiving at the server through the access point a message indicative of the wireless device joining the network and providing the hardware address of the wireless device; updating a list of hardware addresses for clients in the network to include the hardware address of the wireless device, the list including a respective Internet Protocol (“IP”) address for each hardware address; and, sending from the server to at least one of the wireless device, the at least one client, and the access point, the updated list of hardware addresses to thereby reduce a number of request messages broadcast on the network for information that is contained in the updated list that the wireless device need leave a sleep mode to process.

    • A method for providing leased network addresses for a host from a server executing on a server device is disclosed. A first request for a leased network address from the host, relayed by an intermediate device, is received. The intermediate device filters communications between the host and the server device. A response is generated for the host, by the server, which offers a leased network address for a particular period of time and includes a network address of the intermediate device. The network address of the intermediate device is provided in a portion of the response normally designated for indicating a network address of the server. By providing the address of the intermediate device in the portion of the response designated for the server address, the server causes the client to send renewal requests to the intermediate device so that a relay process on the intermediate device can properly operate on the request, without modifying the client process.
