    • Two methods are provided for selecting the QoS level during a connection between a first media gateway which is associated with a first subscriber and a first network operation, and a second media gateway which is associated with a second subscriber and possibly a second network operation, either in a packet network via an exchange by a CODEC or in a network via an exchange by a transmission technique. In such methods, the first subscriber and/or the first network operator signals to a first media gateway controller that they would like another QoS. During the first method, a CODEC used in the connection is modified via the first and second media gateways and two media gateway controllers. During the second method, an IP connection is deviated towards a TDM connection, or vice versa, via additional TDM endpoints and the aforementioned components. It is thus possible to adapt the QoS level to the level currently required.

    • A communications infrastructure is provided with a service system that facilitates the setting up of data transfer operations between end systems connected to the infrastructure. When a first end system wishes to initiate a data transfer operation, it contacts the service system and establishes a transfer-operation characteristic for the proposed data transfer operation that is known both to itself and the service system. The first end system then contacts the target end system with which it wishes to effect a data transfer operation and passes it the aforesaid transfer-operation characteristic. The target end system uses the received transfer-operation characteristic to check with the service system that the proposed data transfer from the first end system is known and acceptable to the service system; only if this check is passed does the target end system proceed with the data transfer operation proposed by the first end system. With this arrangement, the target end system can be sure that it only participates in data transfer operations with parties vetted by the service system.

    • A system and method for transmitting packet data in a communications system assigns an IP address to a terminal based on a network access identifier corresponding to the terminal, and then sends packet data to the terminal using the IP address. The terminal may be a simple IP user terminal or a mobile IP user terminal, and the packet data being sent preferably corresponds to an IP push service. In order to send the packet data, a protocol link is established between the terminal and network. Transmission of packet data on this link may be managed using an information table which relates information corresponding to the IP address to the network access identifier. This table is updated with information relating to the IP address when, for example, the network access identifier changes, when a point-to-point protocol timer expires, when an IP registration expires a location of the terminal changes. Upon expiration of any of the aforementioned time periods, the link between the terminal and network may be eliminated, thereby freeing the IP address for use by other terminals in the system.

    • The invention relates to a process for establishing a communications connection (KOM2) between a mobile telephone terminal (TEA) of a first subscriber (A) and a communications unit (TEB) of a second subscriber (B), and to a network server (NESERV) for the execution of this process. A communications connection (KOM1) between the mobile telephone terminal (TEA) of the first subscriber (A) and the network server (NESERV) is initiated by the mobile telephone terminal (TEA). Via the initiated communications connection (KOM1) between the mobile telephone terminal (TEA) of the first subscriber (A) and the network server (NESERV), identity data describing the identity of a vehicle (CB) are sent from the mobile telephone terminal (TEA) to the network server (NESERV).
