    • A self-referencing power converter operates at a high frequency with a low loss, light weight ferrite core transformer. The transformer primary is selectively connected across a DC source of rectified AC power to provide energy storage followed by a predetermined time period of disconnect to provide energy transfer by way of transformer flyback. The energy storage cycle begins when the voltage across the primary winding of the transformer does not exceed a predetermined value and the predetermined time period of disconnect has ended. A current sensing circuit senses the current flowing through the primary winding, permitting such current to flow until a power reference is reached. A comparison circuit in the transformer secondary compares a reference voltage with an operating voltage and returns any error voltage to the primary circuit, the error voltage then being used to set the power reference.

    • A DC voltage converter includes an oscillator that converts a DC battery voltage to an oscillating voltage, a low voltage transformer that increases the oscillating voltage to a higher oscillating voltage, and a voltage rectifying-capacitor charging network or multiplier that increases the higher oscillating voltage to yet a higher DC voltage at an output terminal for DC high voltage utilization devices and the like. An electric control switch is selectively actuated by the user to apply the battery voltage to the oscillator, resulting in the generation of the stepped-up DC voltage at an output terminal. Another DC voltage converter has an electronic switching circuit that automatically turns the oscillator on and off and a load capacitor across the electrodes that is charged and discharged to provide a shocking voltage. Utilization devices for the voltage developed by the converter shown are a miniature animal training device and a cattle prod device. The miniature animal training device has a pair of outwardly projecting electrodes mounted on a side at one end of the housing that is sized and shaped to fit within and conform to the palm of a hand. The cattle prod device has a pair of electrodes fixedly mounted on the end of a housing assembly made up of telescoping tubular housing sections arranged for relative axial movement whereby the pressing of the electrodes against an object to be shocked actuates the electric control switch and causes a shock of the object. The housing assembly is releasably supported by a rigid handle or an extensible handle assembly.

    • Pulsewidth determining circuitry for switching regulator power supplies employs a saturable reactor current comparator that controls a circuit that switches off the primary current whenever it instantaneously exceeds a value dependent upon a control signal derived from the power supply D.C. output level.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONRecent power supply improvements include the development of the highly efficient switching regulator power supplies which dissipate a minimum of electrical power and therefore obviate the need for the complex cooling schemes normally required by the more conventional regulators that operate by dissipating substantial amounts of power to achieve the desired output level. Switching regulators are generally voltage regulating circuits which sample the regulator output voltage, compare it with the voltage reference, and use the error voltage to control the on-time to off-time ratio of an electronic switch in series between an unregulated D.C. source and either a series inductor or the primary winding of the regulator transformer, the secondary winding of which is coupled to rectifying circuits which provide the regulator D.C. output voltage.The switch in series with the power source and the transformer primary winding produces pulsed D.C. which is readily transformed into the secondary winding of the transformer. The width of the pulses produced by the action of the series switch determines the level of output voltage produced by the supply.There are two basic types of pulsewidth determining methods used to determine the "ON" time of the series switch. One type employs a timing circuit that predetermines the "ON" time to a value dependent upon a D.C. control signal as described in U.S. Pat. No. 4,037,271 to Keller. The second basic pulsewidth determining method employs a current comparator circuit that immediately switches the primary current off when it instantaneously exceeds a value dependent upon a D.C. control signal.Briefly described, the circuitry of the invention includes a three-winding saturable current sensing transformer having a control winding through which flows a saturating D.C. control signal dependent upon the power supply output voltage level. When current flows and builds up in the regulator primary circuit and through a second winding in series with the switching transistor, the saturating effect of the control signal will be overcome and the transformer becomes effective and induces a signal into a third winding that instantaneously turns off the switching transistor, thereby cutting off the flow of primary current until re-started by a pulse originating from a trigger oscillator.

    • A clamp circuit for the protection of a semiconductor switch. The circuit has particular value in a stored energy inverter. The energy which is not delivered to the secondary winding would normally result in an induced voltage of reversed polarity upon opening the switch connecting the primary winding to the source of electrical energy. This induced voltage adds to the supply voltage to create a high voltage across the switch. Semiconductor switches having limited dissipation ability are protected by connecting an inductance-capacitance resonant circuit across the switch. When the switch is open, the capacitor charges to a voltage of a first polarity. When the switch is closed, a halfcycle of oscillation occurs to reverse the polarity of the capacitor voltage. This stored charge serves to absorb the induced voltage which results from opening the switch, thereby limiting dissipation within the switch during this period.
