    • In exemplary implementations of this invention, light from a backlight is transmitted through two stacked LCDs and then through a diffuser. The front side of the diffuser displays a time-varying sequence of 2D images. Processors execute an optimization algorithm to compute optimal pixel states in the first and second LCDs, respectively, such that for each respective image in the sequence, the optimal pixel states minimize, subject to one or more constraints, a difference between a target image and the respective image. The processors output signals to control actual pixel states in the LCDs, based on the computed optimal pixel states. The 2D images displayed by the diffuser have a higher spatial resolution than the native spatial resolution of the LCDs. Alternatively, the diffuser may be switched off, and the device may display either (a) 2D images with a higher dynamic range than the LCDs, or (b) an automultiscopic display.

    • A pixel array structure for populating the display area of a display device includes a repeated first pixel group that consists of one or more first colored subpixels, three or more second colored subpixels and two or more third colored subpixels. The respective numbers of the first colored subpixels, the second colored subpixels, and the third colored subpixels that are provided within the first pixel group are in a respective ratio of 1:3:2. In one embodiment, an input RGB image is remapped to have luminance values corresponding to Cyan-Magenta-Yellow coordinates and the latter are used in combination with subpixel rendering (SPR) to drive the colored subpixels of the pixel array structure.

    • The present disclosure provides a pixel array, a display including the pixel array and a method for presenting an image on the display. The pixel array is composed of a plurality of basic pixel units repeated in horizontal and vertical directions. Each of the basic pixel units includes a first pixel point, a second pixel point and a third pixel point arranged from top to bottom. The first pixel point is composed of a first sub-pixel and a second sub-pixel located in two horizontal rows. The second pixel point is composed of a third sub-pixel and a first sub-pixel located in two horizontal rows. The third pixel point is composed of a second sub-pixel and a third sub-pixel located in two horizontal rows. With the solutions of the present disclosure, accuracy and yield of evaporation and image resolution may be improved.
