    • A method for producing a value T being representative of the mean engine torque generated on a crankshaft of an internal combustion engine includes the steps of producing a speed vector including values being representative of instantaneous speeds of the engine during a sampling period, determining a mean engine speed n during said sampling period from the speed vector, determining a value Px, being representative of the frequency contribution of the speed vector at the frequency x*n, where x is a pre-selected order, and producing a value T being representative of the mean engine torque on the crankshaft during said sampling period, wherein T is derived from a mathematical expression including a polynomial having at least a term k*n*Px, where k is a polynomial constant. A device for producing a value T is also disclosed.

    • Engine measuring equipment for obtaining engine torque regarded as necessary for engine performance assessments for a short time period during a period when engine revolution is under a transient state is disclosed. The engine measuring equipment includes a central control unit for controlling throttle opening degrees due to revolution of the engine and load torque of the dynamometer; a detector connected to an output shaft of the engine, for detecting measurement data including at least revolution and shaft torque of the engine driven by controlling the central control unit; and a signal processing unit for measuring engine torque based on measurement data from the detector. The signal processing unit operates so as to calculate the engine torque based on time series data of the revolution and the shaft torque detected with the detector to measure engine torque from transient state data.

    • An apparatus for measuring the acceleration of an engine for use in a race car for matching the engine to the car for a particular racetrack and includes an engine test stand having a base and an inertia shaft mounted thereto coupled to a gear box. The test stand includes an engine cart for mounting the engine thereto and positionable for coupling the engine to the gear box and has a plurality of selectively engageable inertia wheels attached thereto. The method includes mounting an engine to the engine cart and positioning the engine cart for alignment with the gear box coupling the engine to the gear box. The engine is then accelerated through a predetermined RPM range so that measurements of elapsed time at preselected RPMs can be determined and a selected load to simulate a racetrack length.

Connected to the engine shaft speed selector are an engine duty control unit and a clock pulse generator. The pulse train producing unit is connected to the pulse former to which a unit for producing a preset number of pulses is connected. The device control unit and the unit for producing a preset number of pulses are connected to the unit for determining the difference of two adjacent pulse trains and to the clock pulse generator.

    • A performance analyzer for use in conjunction with prime movers and vehicles, wherein circuitry electrically connected to the vehicle produces a first electrical signal having a frequency proportional to the vehicle velocity, as for example, measurement of the rotational velocity of a member associated with the prime mover. Other circuitry is provided for producing an electrical signal proportional to the rate of change of the first signal. The two electrical signals are multiplied together electrically and connected to a measuring device to thereby ascertain the available power of the vehicle. The circuitry includes apparatus by which one of the signals can be used to measure the velocity of the vehicle or the rpm of the prime mover, while also enabling the acceleration of the prime mover to be measured by bypassing the multiplier. Hence the analyzer of the present invention measures the velocity, acceleration, and available power of the vehicle.
