    • A safety device for a projectile, adapted to make a barrier between an ignition charge in the forward end of the projectile and one or more incendiary and/or explosive charges situated behind the ignition charge. The device comprises two discs having concentric apertures therethrough, situated behind the ignition charge. A plug constituting the barrier is situated in the aperture in the foremost disc, and a split ring which is held together by a spring supports the plug, the split ring being supported by the rearmost disc. The plug comprises at least one portion adapted to seal the aperture in the foremost disc when being exposed to pressure developed by firing of the ignition charge prior to arming of the projectile. Arming takes place only when the projectile reaches a rotational velocity sufficient to open the split ring because of the centrifugal forces, whereby these forces exceed the resistance of the spring. In this condition the plug is allowed to pass rearwardly and to impact against the incendiary and/or explosive charge or charges, and the combustion gases from the ignition charge are also allowed to move together with the plug, whereby ignition of the other charge or charges takes place.

    • This invention relates to a dual purpose, artillery deliverable, submissile grenade effective for use against both personnel and armored material targets. The grenade has a fragmenting antipersonnel tubular housing means, a hollow, anti-materiel shaped charge cone operatively positioned proximate to the housing means, an explosive means operatively positioned intermediate to the anti-personnel housing and the shaped charge cone for fragmenting the tubular housing means and forcibly expelling the cone from the housing against the armored target, a fuzing means which is actuated by a ribbon stabilizer is fixedly attached to one end of the housing means to initiate the explosive means upon impact of the grenade on the target, and for holding the grenade in a safe unarmed position when the grenade is being delivered by artillery to the target.

    • A delay arming mechanism having an outer housing and an inner housing rotatably mounted within the outer housing. A firing mechanism is also located within the inner housing and a plurality of lockweights prevent the movement of the firing mechanism. Upon spinning of the outer housing, the inner housing initially remains stationary due to its inertia. Eventually due to friction the inner housing also begins to spin. At a predetermined RPM the lockweights within the inner housing move out of engagement with the firing mechanism and allows for its movement into the actuating position. It is the time necessary for the inner housing to reach the speed of the outer housing which constitutes the delay time of this invention.

An improved ordnance fuze-arming mechanism for use on a spinning missile, said mechanism comprising in combination: a cylindrical fuze body having a flat circular face located in a plane perpendicular to the axis of missile rotation, first and second flat planar leaf members, each of said members having one of its ends pivotally connected to said face at spaced-apart points such that a flat side of each leaf member is movable around its pivot point parallel to said face, the other end of each leaf member extending adjacent the perimeter of said face and curving to engage each other at their outermost ends, the other end of the first leaf member having an elongated serrated blade portion, said blade portion having opposite edges with a series of adjacent grooves formed in each edge, the grooves on opposite edges being arranged so that the inner apexes of the grooves in one edge are opposite the outer apexes of the grooves in the other edge, the other end of said second leaf having an elongated opening therein for receiving said serrated blade portion, spring means connected to said fuze body and to the pivoted ends of said members so that said blade portion is urged into said opening, said opening having opposite inwardly projecting lips forming an entrance and adapted to engage said blade such that when one lip engages an inner apex on one edge, the other lip is opposite but just out of contact with an outer apex on the other edge, said lips thereby alternately locking and unlocking with said grooves when said leaf members are urged apart by continuous centrifugal forces produced by continued missile rotation, the alternate locking and unlocking of said leaf members continuing until said members separate, and means in said fuze to effect detonation when said leaf members separate.
