    • A safety device for a projectile, adapted to make a barrier between an ignition charge in the forward end of the projectile and one or more incendiary and/or explosive charges situated behind the ignition charge. The device comprises two discs having concentric apertures therethrough, situated behind the ignition charge. A plug constituting the barrier is situated in the aperture in the foremost disc, and a split ring which is held together by a spring supports the plug, the split ring being supported by the rearmost disc. The plug comprises at least one portion adapted to seal the aperture in the foremost disc when being exposed to pressure developed by firing of the ignition charge prior to arming of the projectile. Arming takes place only when the projectile reaches a rotational velocity sufficient to open the split ring because of the centrifugal forces, whereby these forces exceed the resistance of the spring. In this condition the plug is allowed to pass rearwardly and to impact against the incendiary and/or explosive charge or charges, and the combustion gases from the ignition charge are also allowed to move together with the plug, whereby ignition of the other charge or charges takes place.

    • A safety device for a projectile is provided which includes a charge adapted to function as either an ignition charge or as a booster and relay charge. The charge comprises at least two components each of which comprises solid particles. These solid particles are disposed in the same cavity in the projectile and are entirely or partly separated. The particles forming the components are arranged in relation to each other such that the two components will be mixed subsequent to the firing of the projectile, responsive to the acceleration, rotation and retardation forces to which the particles are subjected after the projectile is fired. The two components comprise an oxygen donating component and a fuel component, and a third component for promoting mixing of the two may also be included.

    • Improvements in a multi-capability projectile having a heavy primary penetration element surrounded by a splintering and fragmenting secondary penetration element which extends forwardly of the primary penetration element to form a cavity having a bursting charge therein, the projectile having a nose portion forwardly of that cavity with an ignition charge therein. The rear of the secondary penetration element is stepped inwardly to form a smaller recess which receives and holds the rear end of the primary penetration element. A shoulder adjacent this smaller rearward portion can be formed in accordance with an improved method with an annular groove, according to which the portion of that shoulder radially inwardly of the groove is urged against the side of the primary penetration element to form a rimmed part which secures the same. The annular space surrounding the forward end of the primary penetration element can be filled with an incendiary charge, the bursting charge being located forwardly thereof. The forward end of the secondary penetration element can be tapered inwardly to better confine the charge.

    • A projectile has a primary penetration element arranged at the rear end, and surrounded by a substantially tube like secondary penetration element, so that in front of the primary penetration element is formed a cavity within the secondary penetration element. The cavity contains a bursting charge or bursting and incendiary charges, ignitable by means of an ignition charge arranged in the nose of the projectile upon impingement against a target. The construction is such that the primary penetration element is positively prevented from moving forwardly into the cavity before the projectile hits a target and the secondary element is substantially fragmented. The projectile gives considerable splinter and fragmentation in lighter to medium targets, while functioning generally as a purely armor piercing projectile against heavy targets.
