    • Flocs of papermaking fiber are dispersed by a multiplicity of white-water jets directed into a papermachine headbox prior to the slice opening. Jet direction is oriented counterflow to the papermaking stock slice flow to create maximum turbulence, fluid shear and energy dissipation. Such jets issue from nozzle orifices in the slice profiling bar and are supplied with fluid through a two-stage manifold system. To preserve vertical plane pliability of the conduit-connected profiling bar, section area of the profiling bar between nozzles is minimized. Self sealing, push fit, fluid conduit connections with the jet nozzle orifices are made with flexible conduits between a sectional bar type of intermediate header and the profiling bar.

    • In a multi-ply headbox, the nozzle chamber is subdivided by rigid partition walls into a number of nozzle chambers, and the slice openings or outlet slices are adjustable independently of one another. This is accomplished by providing a pivotable mounting of the partition wall or walls in a guide block, for instance, such pivotable mounting being accomplished by a substantially cylindrical shell or cup bearing structure. The desired pivotable movement or adjustment of the rigid partition wall can be undertaken by an inclined groove-cam guide arrangement effective at a projection of the partition wall or by pressure cushions, such as pressure hoses effective at both sides of the projection.

    • A Fourdrinier-type paper machine having a wet end with a headbox for storing a mixture of pulp and water, this pulp mixture being jetted onto a fabric having two side edges, this fabric forming an endless belt the upper surface of which is caused to continuously move away from the headbox, including an apparatus for continually supporting and curling the edge of the fabric so as to prevent loss of pulp mixture off the sides of the fabric and so as to prevent edge wave formation which would require substantial trimmage and waste. The apparatus includes a pair of bars having a wedge-shaped cross-section, one edge of each inserted under one side of the fabric, to cause the edge of the fabric to curl upward. Apparatus is provided to adjust the amount of curl. Several of these curl adjusting apparatuses are placed along the length of the bars so that the amount of curl can be different at different points along the bars. For instance, the curl might be greatest at the point where the pulp hits the fabric, and it may be slowly tapered to zero over the length of the bars. The upper surface of the fabric is also caused to continuously move from side to side, and an end block is provided at the leading edge of each bar to prevent the fabric from running off the edge of the bar during the course of any lateral movement of the fabric.

    • Method and apparatus for regulating pressure in a wedge-shaped space between the wall of the headbox lip beam or the like and the breast roll. An arrangement is provided by which air jets are directed in a direction opposite to the direction in which the forming wire moves on the breast roll to eject air out of the wedge-shaped space to maintain the pressure induced therein at a desired level. The apparatus includes a blow box coupled to a source of pressurized air and the box having a wall in opposed relationship to the forming wire in which nozzle openings or slots are formed through which the air jets are directed. The blow box has a wider side which substantially closes the wedge-shaped space. Water jets are directed into the wedge-shaped space by water supply devices provided on the blow box for cleaning purposes.
