    • A method for creating a registered embossed pattern on a metal coil includes providing a pattern applicator roll and a drive motor for rotating the roll, moving the coil sequentially into contact with the applicator roll means and permit it to create a pattern on the moving strip. Measuring the pattern length and comparing the same with the desired pattern length. Adjusting the speed of rotation of the pattern applicator roll if the measured pattern length departs from the desired pattern length by a predetermined amount preferably coil line speed is also monitored. A microprocessor may be used to effect the comparison between the desired pattern length and the actual pattern length. Apparatus for creating a registered embossed pattern on a metal coil includes a pattern applicator roll which has the strip from the coil moved into contacting relationship therewith, an appropriate drive motor to drive the roll, and apparatus for monitoring coil line speed, pattern length and motor speed. A microprocessor stores the desired pattern length and receives information regarding line speed, pattern length, and motor speed and where an adjustment is desired, either speeds up the applicator roll where the pattern length is longer than the desired pattern length, or reduces the applicator roll speed, if the pattern length is less than the desired pattern length.

    • A moving web is divisible into a leader having a first set of registration marks and a trailer having a second set of registration marks. At a transition between the first and second sets of registration marks, a target is applied adjacent the initial mark of the second set. The target is sensed and tracked electronically to a shear. During an order change or a roll-to-roll change within an order, the web is automatically severed transversely by the shear two or more times to chop out a portion of the leader and trailer including the transition between the sets of marks. The leading edge of the trailer is tracked to a station intermediate the shear and the cut-off machine. The cut-off machine knives "crop" cut the trailer at the first registration mark following the leading edge of the trailer and thereafter cut the trailer automatically into blanks in synchronization with the second set of marks. Operation of the cut-off machine knives in the cut-to-mark mode is maintained without loss of synchronization across the portion of the web chopped out by the shear. Operator intervention is eliminated, and scrap is minimized.

    • The feeding of a plurality of material webs to a machine for simultaneous processing of the webs, is controlled by web-feed control apparatus arranged to synchronize feeding of the webs relative to each other. This synchronization is effected by using optical sensors to detect spacing marks along each web and then controlling the rate of advance of each web such that the spacing marks pass the optical sensors simultaneously for all the webs. The rate of web advance may be controlled by selective activation of braking devices or by varying the drive to the advancing means of each web.

    • A continuous clear surfaced web adapted to be fed from a supply roll thereof for a converting operation thereon is preprinted with a succession of identical repeat patterns extending over the entire width of the web. Each pattern consists of areas which contain printed matter and at least one longitudinable discontinuous area or segment which, except for the presence of a printed register mark therein, is clear and unprinted. A photo sensitive scanner is directed at the register mark track of the feeding web for detecting the register marks and controlling in accordance therewith the timing of an associated machine operation, such as web splicing, so as to be performed in register with the web pattern. The operation of the scanner is controlled by a digital reset counter of pulses fed from a pulse generator driven by the web feeding mechanism. The counter is reset to zero upon the detection of each register mark. It is initially preset to a number during the count of which the scanner is deactivated and after the count of which the scanner is activated. The number preset in the counter corresponds to the length of the register mark track starting from one register mark and continuing up to the segment of clear track containing the next register mark. The counter thus gates the operation of the scanner so as to detect only register marks and not to misread other printed matter lying in the scanned track as a register mark.
