    • A pedestal supported chair such as a swivel type chair in which a seat plate carrier pivoted to a base member fixed to the pedestal and having a back rest carrier is provided with adjustment means operable over range of user weights for adjusting a torsion spring mounted with its windings on the pivot by which the seat plate carrier is mounted to the base member. First legs of the spring member engage the seat plate carrier and second spring legs are connected to a holder supported from the base member. Rotation of a shaft passing through the holder moves the holder towards or away from the base member and results in greater or lesser tightening of the windings of the torsion spring to compensate in corresponding manner for the greater or lesser weight loadings which can be imposed on the seat plate carrier and on a chair back rest carrier when a user whose weight will be any one of such in a range of weights, sets a positioning relationship between the seat element and back rest and back rest intended to be that most comfortable to the user.

    • A vacuum formed, foam-filled seat or back cushion having a covering and an inner portion comprised of a first type of foam further includes an insert comprised of a second type of a softer foam for use in high pressure areas in the support surface. The surface of the cushion is contoured in accordance with an intended user's dimensions and support surface configuration for improved user support and comfort, particularly for a non-ambulatory, handicapped person. The softer foam insert is formed integrally with the remaining foam portion of the cushion to provide a smooth, continuous, secure support surface. The cushion's covering is formed about the foam insert in a manner which prevents stretching or tearing of the covering due to the difference in firmness of the underlying foam portions. The cushion includes a rigid base formed integrally with the foam core as well as rigid internal lateral reinforcements for user support and seating stability. Provision is made during cushion formation for the inclusion of lap belt slots and an incontinence relief tube extending through a seat cushion as well as undercut front edge for a user with tight hamstrings.

    • The chair has a seat or seat portion equipped with a balance and its linkage structure has links fixed in articulated manner to a support arm and to which there is articulated a balance device in parallelogram-like manner. A slide is slidingly guided on the balance device and is connected by means of a thrust rod to an extension arm of the backrest-side link. The slide is also connected to one end of a spring element, the other end of which is supported on the balance device. The linkage structure is supported on the backrest by means of a backrest strut articulated to the slide. The seat and backrest portions of the chair frame can be constructed as a plastic shell with a knee-side bending joint and a further bending joint between the seat portion and the backrest portion. Due to the construction of the chair frame to incorporate a balance device, as least part of the forces exerted by the occupant or user of the chair can be absorbed by the balance device, so that the spring element can be made smaller and therefore less expensively, and there is also no need to adjust or adapt the spring element to different body weights of the users of the chair.
