    • An insect collection device comprises, in one embodiment, a compression chamber movable between compressed and uncompressed positions, an elongated housing defining a housing interior, a partition, and a movable closure. The partition separates the interior into upstream and downstream regions and is constructed to permit airflow between these regions while impeding passage of insects therebetween. The movable closure is disposed on a free end portion of the housing and moves between a first position hindering access to the upstream region and a second position creating an entryway into the upstream region. The movable closure is preferably biased into the first position and is only urged into the second position upon actuation of the compression chamber from the compressed position to an uncompressed position such that insects in a vicinity of the free end are drawn into the upstream region for collection.

    • An insect collection device (10) comprises an elongated housing (20) extending in a downstream direction between first (22) and second (24) ends about a housing interior. A partition (36) separates the interior (26) into an upstream region proximate the first end (22) and a downstream region proximate the second end (24). The partition (36) is constructed to permit airflow between these regions, while impeding passage of insects therebetween. A movable closure (50) is disposed on a first end portion (33) of the housing to move between a closed position and an open position to create an entryway into the upstream region. A compression chamber (70) is disposed on a second end portion of the housing (20) and moves between compressed and uncompressed positions to urge the closure into the second/open position such that insects in a vicinity of the first end (22) are drawn into the upstream region for collection. A methodology for capturing insects is also provided.

    • Microwave energy may be used to dielectrically heat a medium, which can remediate the medium. An apparatus or a system employing this concept is well-suited for various environmental applications, such as in-situ remediation of soil, sludge or spills. The system comprises a microwave energy source having a preselected microwave frequency for emitting microwave energy. The system also comprises a wave-guide section having a cross-section dimensioned in accordance with the wavelength of the microwave frequency for transmitting microwave energy. A broadband mode converter may be disposed in alignment with the wave-guide section. An applicator element is disposed in alignment with the broadband more converter for applying microwave energy directly to the medium without confining the medium, thereby removing contaminants from the medium.

    • A trap for collecting gravid mosquitos includes a smooth surfaced vessel containing oviposition attractant, such as an infusion of hay in water. A strip of rough material is located above the surface of the oviposition attractant. An infrared sensor adjacent the strip and above the surface of the oviposition attractant activates a trigger circuit which turns on a fan. The smooth surfaced vessel is unsuitable for oviposition by a gravid mosquito. The rough strip, however, provides a mosquito attempting to lay eggs with a good purchase above the water. When a mosquito finds the rough strip and moves towards the water, the mosquito interrupts an infrared beam. The infrared sensor activates the trigger circuit to turn on the fan for a short period. The fan produces an air flow through a suction tube to draw the mosquito through the suction tube into a collection tube. The inventive trap is fully automated, robust, and does not damage mosquitos during capture.

    • An apparatus for eliminating fire ants in mounds utilizes a high capacity fan to set up a confined airflow adjacent a fire ant mound such that a substantial portion of the mound and its contents are entrained by the airflow. The mound and ants therein are carried by the airflow within the apparatus wherein they are pulverized either by the action of the fan or by a separate mechanical pulverizer into which the mound and ants are deposited from the airflow. The apparatus is designed as an accessory to a tractor or the like and may be powered from the power take-off unit of a tractor.
