    • This disclosure depicts an electron gun for use in a color cathode ray tube of the small neck, shadow mask-type. The gun includes an extended field lens for generating a cluster of electron beams converged and individually focused at the screen of the tube. Three main focus lens means are situated on lens axes which are mutually parallel and parallel to a gun central axis. At least two of the lens axis are off-axis with respect to the gun axis. The focus lens means has for each beam at least three electrodes including a focus electrode for receiving a variable potential for electrically adjusting the focus of the beam. In succession down-beam, there are at least two associated electrodes having potentials thereon which forms in the gaps between adjacent electrodes significant main focus field components. To adjust beam focus, the strength of a first of these components is controlled by adjustment of the voltage received by the focus electrode. The strength of the second of the field components is relatively less than that of the first component. Each of the lens means is characterized by having addressing faces of the associated electrodes which define the second field component being so structured and disposed as to cause the second field component to be asymmetrical and effective to significantly divert the beam from its path in convergence of the beams without any significant distortion of the beam and substantially independently of any beam-focusing adjustments of the first field component.

    • This disclosure depicts a color television picture tube having a glass bulb which includes an approximately rectangular, flangeless, three-dimensionally curved faceplate having a convex front surface, a concave rear surface and an edge surface. The bulb has a funnel with a convex seal land which mates with the concave inner surface of the faceplate. The tube has a hybrid implosion protection system comprising a high tensile strength frame which surrounds and closely hugs at least the edge surface of the faceplate to define a cavity between the frame and the edge surface. The cavity contains a hardened cement, the frame and cement binding up the edge surface of the faceplate to provide a measure of implosion protection. A tension member is disposed over the frame and the hardened cement in the cavity so as to surround the faceplate in straight lines between the faceplate corners. Means are provided on the frame for retaining the tension member on the faceplate corners. The member is under tension to produce radially inwardly directed force components acting on the faceplate corners through the frame and the hardened cement, the combination of the cemented frame and tension member producing a high degree of implosion protection for the bulb. A method for assembling the implosion protection system is also disclosed.

    • A low-pass filter useful in association with a phase locked loop for controlling the frequency of a voltage controlled oscillator on the basis of an error signal resulting from a comparison between a reference signal and the oscillator's output. The low-pass filter comprises means responsive to the error signal for developing an output current for charging or discharging a capacitive network according to the frequency and phase deviations represented by the error signal. For large frequency and phase deviations extended charging or discharging currents provide high acquisition speeds whereas, as the frequency and phase deviation represented by the error signal decreases, drastically reduced charging or discharging currents result thereby effectively reducing the bandwidth of the filter for facilitating reference signal sideband supression as frequency "lock-on" is approached and when phase lock is achieved.

    • An electronic remote control transmitter employs a two transistor cascade oscillator having positive and negative feedback loops. The oscillator voltage is supplied through a switch assembly containing a plurality of momentary contact switches to a pair of voltage dividers supplying signal voltages in predetermined ratios to a two branch circuit in the negative feedback loop. One branch contains an inductor and the second branch a capacitor. Closure of any switch completes the DC circuits for the transistors. Signal voltage is supplied to the branches to produce a minimum amplitude, zero phase shift condition which establishes oscillation at that predetermined frequency. The output of the oscillator is amplified by a third transistor and supplied to an ultrasonic transducer for generating acoustical control signals.

    • A television receiver includes a tuner, IF amplifier, video and audio processing circuitry and deflection circuits. Two quadrature detectors are driven from the IF amplifier, one tuned to the sound IF carrier frequency and the other tuned to the picture IF carrier frequency. A combining circuit accepts only negative-going error voltages from the first detector and only positive-going error voltages from the second detector to produce an AFC with a response curve defined by the sound IF frequency at one end and the picture IF frequency at the other end. The output of the combining circuit supplies a voltage controllable oscillator in the tuner.
