    • This invention relates to a process for making a vulcanized rubber article comprising the steps of (1) kneading at a temperature within the range of about 70° C. to about 190° C. in a bulk thermomechanical mixer (a) an amino group containing rubbery polymer, wherein said amino group containing rubbery polymer contains from about 0.1 weight percent to about 20 weight percent monomer units containing an amino group, (b) from 0.1 to about 25 phr of an organophilic 2:1 layered silicate clay selected from the group consisting of montmorillonite clays, bentonite clays, hectorite clays, saponite clays, nontronite clays, beidellite clays, fluorohectorite clays, stevensite clays, volkonskoite clays, sauconite clays, and laponite clays, and (c) at least one conventional rubber compounding ingredient selected from the group consisting of curing agents, cure accelerators, cure activators, processing aids, reinforcing fillers, oils, cure retarders, resins, and antidegradants, to produce a mixed compound; (2) discharging the said mixed compound from the bulk thermomechanical mixer; (3) forming the mixed compound into an article; and (4) vulcanizing the article.

    • The process and catalyst system of this invention can be utilized to synthesize polybutadiene rubber having a high trans content and a low melting point by solution polymerization. The trans-polybutadiene rubber made by the process of this invention can be utilized in tire tread rubbers that exhibit outstanding wear characteristics. More importantly, the trans-polybutadiene rubber of this invention can be easily processed because of its low level of crystallinity. In fact, the trans-polybutadiene made by the process of this invention does not need to be heated in a “hot-house” before being used in making rubber compounds. This invention more specifically reveals a process for synthesizing trans-polybutadiene rubber which comprises polymerizing 1,3-butadiene in an organic solvent in the presence of a catalyst system which comprises (a) an organolithium compound, (b) a barium compound selected from the group consisting of (i) barium salts of cyclic alcohols, such as barium mentholate, and (ii) barium thymol, and (c) an organoaluminum compound. The trans-polybutadiene made with the catalyst system of this invention typically has a glass transition temperature that is within the range of about −97° C. to about −90° C., a melting point that is within the range of about −30° C. to about 30° C., and a number average molecular weight that is within the range of about 50,000 to about 200,000.

    • Tire rubbers which are prepared by anionic polymerization are frequently coupled with a suitable coupling agent, such as a tin halide, to improve desired properties. It has been unexpectedly found that greatly improved properties for tire rubbers, such as lower hysteresis, can be attained by asymmetrically coupling the rubber. This invention more specifically discloses an asymmetrical tin-coupled rubbery polymer which is particularly valuable for use in manufacturing tire tread compounds, said asymmetrical tin-coupled rubbery polymer being comprised of a tin atom having at least three polydiene arms covalently bonded thereto, wherein said polydiene arms have a weight average molecular weight which is within the range of about 80,000 to about 300,000, wherein the polydiene arms do not contain blocks of more than about 4 repeat units of vinyl aromatic monomers, and wherein the ratio of the weight average molecular weight to the number average molecular weight of the asymmetrical tin-coupled rubbery polymer is within the range of about 1.4 to about 2.0.

    • The present invention relates to a tire tread compound that is highly loaded with silica. This compound offers the advantages of silica compounding without the need for solution SBR. More specifically, the tire tread rubber formulations of this invention offer an excellent combination of traction, treadwear and rolling resistance characteristics. The subject invention discloses a tire which is comprised of a generally toroidal-shaped carcass with an outer circumferential tread, two spaced beads, at least one ply extending from bead to bead and sidewalls extending radially from and connecting said tread to said beads; wherein said tread is adapted to be ground-contacting; wherein the tread is comprised of (1) 10 phr to 35 phr of high vinyl polybutadiene rubber having a glass transition temperature which is within the range of −40° C. to 10° C., (2) 65 phr to 90 phr of tin-coupled isoprene-butadiene rubber having a glass transition temperature which is within the range of −90° C. to −70° C., (3) 30 phr to 90 phr of silica, (4) 5 phr to 50 phr of carbon black, (5) 2 phr to 50 phr of processing oil and (6) 0.5 phr to 15 phr of a silica coupling agent.

    • The process of this invention can be utilized to stabilize tin-coupled rubbery polymers. This process involves adding a chelating diamine or a metal salt of a cyclic alcohol to the rubbery polymer after the tin coupling has been carried out. This invention more specifically discloses a process for improving the stability of a tin-coupled rubbery polymer which comprises adding a metal salt of a cyclic alcohol to the tin-coupled rubbery polymer subsequent to the time at which the tin-coupled rubbery polymer is coupled. The use of metal salts of cyclic alcohols does not lead to recycle stream contamination because they do not co-distill with hexane or form compounds during steam-stripping which co-distill with hexane. In other words, the boiling points of these metal salts of cyclic alcohols are very high, so they do not co-distill with hexane and contaminate recycle streams. Additionally, metal salts of cyclic alcohols are considered to be environmentally safe. In fact, sodium mentholate is used as a food additive.
