    • According to the present invention, a semiconductor memory device includes an oscillator for generating with a predetermined cycle a timing signal for performing a refresh operation for the memory cell array. The oscillator includes an oscillation circuit, for receiving a predetermined characteristic value and generating the timing signal having the cycle in accordance with the characteristic value; a characteristic value generation circuit, having a programmable memory for generating an adjustment signal for an adjustment of the characteristic value, for transmitting to the oscillation circuit the characteristic value adjusted in accordance with the adjustment signal; and a confirmation switch for generating, instead of the memory, the adjustment signal for a test in accordance with a test entry signal.

    • A semiconductor integrated circuit device includes an external connection terminal receiving a normal signal varying between a high potential and a low potential, and a test mode setting signal, an input circuit which is connected to the external connection terminal and receives the normal signal via the external connection terminal, an n-channel field effect transistor having a gate connected to the external connection terminal, a drain coupled to a first voltage line via a load element, and a source connected to a second voltage line. The test mode setting signal of a potential equal to or higher than the sum of the high potential and the threshold voltage is applied to the n-channel field effect transistor. A test mode setting signal detecting signal used to initiate a test of the semiconductor integrated circuit device is output via the drain of the n-channel field effect transistor.

    • An information retrieval system with good human-interface methods to give the system ease-of-use having two distinctive features with the first being visual interface and the second being natural language interpretation. The visual interface provides for visual interaction for local search and natural language interpretation provides for linguistic interaction for global search. The visual interface provides versatile views onto the contents of the knowledge base that the system has, controlling mechanisms for browsing through the knowledge base, a capability of showing relevant information for the users, and a mechanism for editing a query expression that describes information to retrieve. By using the visual interface for information retrieval, the users can easily create query expressions, by consulting and reacting with the system. The natural language interpretation makes use of a conceptual network as a knowledge-base that stores important concepts and relationships among these concepts. Based on knowledge and information represented in the conceptual network, the meaning of a noun phrase or a nominal compound which is a string of adjectives and nouns with some prepositions can be inferred. The inferred interpretation of such a noun phrase is paraphrased into an expression that the information retrieval system can handle. Therefore, the user of the system can simply describe the desired information in a language to get the desired information.
