    • A method and system are disclosed for creating portfolios of requests so as to reduce or minimize the variance in the workloads generated by those requests. The invention also takes into account the throughput of the servers that are servicing the requests. In a preferred embodiment, the method comprises the steps of establishing a set of system parameters; using said parameters to generate a model, said model including a defined optimization problem; and solving said optimization problem to output a set of mixing weights. The set of parameters and said mixing weights are used to generate a task; and the service requests are distributed to different service teams according to the generated task. Also, for example, the distributing may be done by distributing requests of type i to team j with weight proportional to wij.

    • A method for detecting and alerting a driver of vehicles in their blind spots, includes: tracking movement and relative position of a driver to one or more vehicles; determining one or more driver blind spots; determining when at least one of the one or more vehicles approaches one of the driver blind spots; determining when at least one of the one or more vehicles occupies one of the driver blind spots; activating one or more indicators in response to one or more vehicles approaching and occupying one of the driver blind spots; wherein the one or more indicators comprise light emitting diodes (LED), liquid crystal display (LCD), plasma, projected elements, and electroluminescent elements; and wherein a sequence and pattern of activating the one or more indicators is determined based on the relative position of the driver to the one or more vehicles.

    • Methods and apparatus are disclosed for transmitting data, such as biometric data or Internet telephone data, in a packet network. Packets are split and interchanged prior to transmission across a packet network, such that packets that teach their destination may be processed, even in the presence of lost or delayed packets. Packets of biometric data, such as fingerprints, retinal scans or voice characteristics, or sampled voice packets are split, and optionally interchanged prior to transmission. If some packets are lost or delayed, while some of the packets reach their destination and provide sufficient data for user identification, then the user may be authenticated without requesting the retransmission of the lost or delayed data. If some packets are lost or delayed, while some packets teach their destination, then the received speech samples may be reproduced without requesting the retransmission of the lost or delayed data.

For example, a method of managing a vehicular emergency includes the steps of collecting biometric data regarding at least one occupant of a vehicle, collecting data regarding at least one operational characteristic of the vehicle, and detecting vehicular emergencies through analysis of at least a portion of the biometric data and the operational characteristic data. This method may also include communicating at least one message relating to the data, wherein the content of the message is determined by the processing device based at least in part on the data and/or controlling a function of the vehicle in response to the data. The method may also include collecting data regarding at least one operational characteristic of at least one proximate vehicle.
