    • Disclosed is a xenon lamp used for lighting applications and which is particularly suitable for automobile applications such as headlamps. The benefits of such usage, relative to incandescent lamps commonly employed for automotive forward lighting applications along with discharge lamps for lighting application, are primarily related to the size, shape, quality and concentration of the light generated by the xenon lamp and the ability to selectively move the position of the generated light relative to the reflector in which the xenon lamp is housed. The xenon lamp also provides the ability for the light to be generated by excitation of a D.C. source so as to be first positioned relative to the reflector to serve as the light source for low beam applications and then moved to a second position relative to the reflector to serve as the light source for high beam applications.

    • A ballast circuit arrangement for providing a predetermined desired A.C. voltage to enhance the operation of the gas discharge tube serving as the main light source in a lighting unit of the type which also comprises an incandescent filament serving as a resistive element and a supplementary light source is disclosed. The circuit arrangement operates directly from an applied 220 volt, 50 Hz or 120 volt, 60 Hz alternating current (A.C.) voltage source. The circuit arrangement comprises a capacitor connected serially with both the incandescent filament and the gas discharge tube. If desired, the incandescent filament may be replaced with a resistive element. The value of the capacitor is selected so as to reduce the applied 220 volt, 50 Hz or 120 volt, 60 Hz A.C. source to a desired range for operating the circuit in a manner to develop a desired reduced voltage for operation of the gas discharge tube. The reduced operating voltage correspondingly reduces the restrike voltage that may be necessary to operate the gas discharge tube during restrike conditions. The reduced operating voltage of the gas discharge tube readily allows for the development of the restrike voltage directly available from the typical 220 volts, 50 Hz or 120 volts, 60 Hz A.C. source. The circuit arrangement further provides for an automatic restrike voltage under reduced voltage A.C. source conditions.

    • An optical coupling assembly is useful for coupling a source of light, having high brightness and focussed at a focal plane, to a plurality of optical light conductors. The coupling assembly includes a light transmissive elongated segmented rod-shaped coupling member formed of a plurality of longitudinal sections and a retainer member for holding the longitudinal sections together in an assembled relationship. The coupling member has a central longitudinal axis and at an input end is disposed at the focal plane of the light source, while at an output end is disposed against leading ends of the plurality of optical light conductors. Each longitudinal section of the coupling member has a plurality of spaced longitudinal surfaces capable of internally reflecting light traveling within the longitudinal section. The retainer member is a hollow sleeve which holds the longitudinal sections together in the nested relationship with one another such that some of the longitudinal surfaces of the longitudinal sections define an external circumferential surface of the coupling member whereas others of the longitudinal surfaces of the longitudinal sections define a plurality of internal surfaces within the coupling member which extend from the external circumferential surface to the central longitudinal axis thereof.

    • A liquid crystal display (LCD) is provided with a source of backlighting which augments reflected incident light to provide increased contrast. A liquid crystal cell which does not contain dye, but becomes clear when a field is applied, is sandwiched in back of a liquid crystal cell with a dye and electrically connected so that when the front liquid crystal cell is turned ON to make selected portions of it transparent, the back liquid crystal cell is OFF so that corresponding portions of it are highly reflecting. No voltage is allowed to be applied across nonselected portions of the front liquid crystal and a voltage is applied across corresponding nonselected portions of the back liquid crystal making the nonselected portions of the back liquid crystal clear, producing a display of high contrast. Sandwiched to the rear of the back liquid crystal cell is a clear plastic wedge which is edge lighted. The edge lighted wedge only appears bright in the areas where the voltage on the back liquid crystal cell is OFF or not applied thereto.
