    • A mass spectrometer is disclosed comprising a vortex mass filter/analyser. The vortex mass filter/analyser preferably comprises a chamber with a central rotatable shaft connected to a pressure reducing means. As the shaft rotates, a vortex is created within the chamber. The centrifugal force on an ion in the vortex is arranged to be balanced at a certain radius of rotation within the chamber by the electric force due to an opposed radial electric field. Ions having a certain mass to charge ratio are arranged to be maintained at a stable equilibrium at this radius and can then be selectively removed for further analysis. With this arrangement, no magnetic field is required and the apparatus can operate at pressures around that of atmospheric pressure.

    • A method for the analysis of mixtures of components includes separating or partially separating different components of a mixture of a sample by means that causes the components to elute sequentially over a period of time, forming precursor ions from the components in the eluent, repeatedly switching, altering or varying an Electron Capture Dissociation fragmentation device back and forth between a hi-fragmentation mode and a low-fragmentation mode to alternately produce product ions from the precursor ions in the hi-fragmentation mode and to produce substantially fewer product ions in the low-fragmentation mode, and obtaining mass spectra during the period of time from the precursor and product ions received from the Electron Capture Dissociation fragmentation device.

    • A mass spectrometer is disclosed comprising a FAIMS device comprising two parallel electrodes (9a, 9b) in series with an ion mobility separator (12) forming part of a mass spectrometer. Ions are separated in the FAIMS device (9a, 9b) according to their rate of change of ion mobility with electric field strength. The ions which are onwardly transmitted from the FAIMS device (9a, 9b) are then passed to an ion separator device (12) comprising a plurality of electrodes (12) and an optional ion trapping region (33). Ions are radially confined with the ion separator by application of an AC or RF voltage to the electrodes (12) and ions are separated according to their ion mobility by applying an axial DC voltage gradient which may remain constant as a function of time or which may vary with time.

    • An Electrospray Ionisation ion source and an Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionisation ion source are disclosed which comprise a probe 1 comprising three co-axial capillary tubes 2,3,3′. A blue-flame gas torch 6 is provided downstream of the probe 1 as a combustion source. An analyte solution is sprayed from an inner capillary tube 2 of the probe 1, a combustible gas is supplied to an intermediate capillary tube 3 of the probe 1 and oxygen or air is supplied to an outer capillary tube 3′ of the probe 1. The combustible gas supplies heat to aid desolvation of the droplets emerging from the probe 1 via combustion with the surrounding oxygen-containing atmosphere when combusted by the blue flame torch 6.
