    • A valve timing control apparatus including a drive rotary member, a driven rotary member and an intermediate rotary member rotatable relative to the drive and driven rotary members. A follower is moveably engaged with a radial guide of one of the drive and driven rotary members and a spiral guide of the intermediate rotary member. An actuator rotates the intermediate rotary member to allow a movement of the follower along the radial guide which is converted into relative rotation of the drive and driven rotary members via a link coupling the follower with the other of the drive and driven rotary members. A lubricating oil chamber is arranged to surround an engagement portion between the spiral guide and the follower and pivotal connection portions between one end of the link and the other of the drive and driven rotary members and between an opposite end thereof and the follower.

    • A drive rotation member is rotated about a given axis by a crankshaft of the engine, and a driven rotation member is rotated about the given axis together with a camshaft of the engine. A relative rotation angle control mechanism is arranged through which the drive and driven rotation members are coaxially connected. The relative rotation angle control mechanism has a movable control member which, when applied with an operation force from an actuation device, varies a relative rotation angle between the drive and driven rotation members. The actuation device comprises a first electromagnetic brake which applies an operation force to the movable control member to cause a rotation of the driven rotation member to be shifted in one of advancing and retarding directions with respect to a rotation of the drive rotation member, and a second electromagnetic brake which applies an operation force to the movable control member to cause the rotation of the driven rotation member to be shifted in the other of the advancing and retarding directions with respect to the rotation of the drive rotation member.

    • A PWM inverter includes a plurality of arms connected in parallel with a d.c. power source. Each arm is constituted by an upper arm and a lower arm each having a switching element. A plurality of switching control signals are continuously and alternately applied to one and the other of the two switching elements constituting the same arm respectively. In the PWM inverter, shunt resistors are connected between a minus terminal of the d.c. power source and the lower arms respectively. The PWM inverter further comprises a waveform command generating circuit generating commands representative of current waveforms to be supplied to a load, a carrier wave generating circuit and sample-hold circuits. Each of the sample-hold circuits samples and holds a terminal voltage of the associated shunt resistor in synchronism with the period of the carrier wave generated from the carrier wave generating circuit and at specific timing in a conduction period of the associated switching element.
