    • A device for developing an electrostatic latent image formed on a photosensitive member includes a developing sleeve which is driven to rotate in a predetermined direction and a pressure blade which is kept pressed against the sleeve to form a thin film of uniformly charged toner so as to apply for the latent image for development. In accordance with the present invention, the forward end portion of the pressure blade is specifically shaped such that a projection having the width which substantially corresponds to the width of an image forming area of the photosensitive member is provided to extend beyond a contact line between the sleeve and the blade thereby allowing to form the thin film of toner whose width substantially corresponds to the image forming area of the photosensitive member, thereby preventing the waste of toner from occurring.

    • An exposure unit radiates a light image of an original document onto a charged photoconductive member to form an electrostatic image through localized photoconduction. A developing unit applies a powdered developing substance comprising carrier particles and toner particles to the photoconductive member to develop the electrostatic image and produce a toner image which is transferred and fixed to a copy sheet to produce a permanent reproduction of the original document. Prior to exposure with the light image a reference electrostatic image is formed on the photoconductive member and the electrostatic potential thereof is measured. The intensity of the light image of the original document and/or a developing bias voltage are regulated in accordance with the sensed electrostatic potential. The reference image may be of a reference surface having a predetermined optical density or a portion of the original document produced by reverse optical scanning.

    • A blowing agent is infiltrated into polystyrene resin particles dispersed in an aqueous suspension. Before or during infiltration, a flame retardant solution obtained by dissolving 33-1,000 parts by weight of a powdery flame retardant and 20-200 parts by weight of a flame retardant aid having a 1-hour half-life temperature of 100-250° C. in 100 parts by weight of a plasticizer is supplied to the aqueous suspension to infiltrate the flame retardant and the flame retardant aid into the particles, producing expandable polystyrene resin particles. By dissolving the flame retardant, which doesn't accumulate in the living body and has satisfactory handleability, in a plasticizer, the flame retardant can be evenly infiltrated into resin particles. Consequently, expansion of the expandable particles doesn't result in unevenness of cell density and the particles have excellent heat-fusibility to one another during molding, and molded foam having excellent flame retardancy and heat resistance can be obtained.
