    • A discharge lamp, and particularly a high-pressure gas-discharge lamp (an HID (high-intensity discharge) lamp or UHP (ultra-high performance) lamp), having a reflector and a cooling means is described. The cooling means comprises at least one nozzle (3) by which a flow of gas can be directed onto the discharge lamp, the at least one nozzle (3) being so arranged that it does not extend, at least to any substantial degree, into a beam path produced by the lamp (2) and the reflector (1). In this way, the cooling means does not produce any obstacles on the beam path for the light. With preferred embodiments, it is possible to produce a turbulent flow that surrounds particularly the discharge vessel (21) of the lamp and that considerably increases the effectiveness of the cooling means. Further embodiments also allow the discharge lamp to be operated in a plurality of different positions without individual regions of the lamp being too little or too severely cooled.

    • The invention relates to a projection display device comprising an illumination system having a light source and an optical guiding means for providing an illumination beam, and an image display system for modulating the illumination beam with image information and projecting the image on a screen, and means for selectively transmitting a portion of the illumination beam having a desired characteristic to the image display system, and means for feeding back an unused portion of the illumination beam to the illumination system for re-illumination of the image display system. In order to improve the efficiency of the projection display device, a reflection means is provided at a portion of an entrance surface of the light-guiding means and the unused portion of the illumination beam is fed back into the light-guiding means.

    • A high-pressure gas discharge lamp with a cooling arrangement is described, which is characterized in particular in that the lamp can be operated at an increased power, an increase in the temperature of the coldest spot in the lamp interior generating a higher gas pressure, while the cooling arrangement (7, 71, 83, 82) is constructed and dimensioned such that a devitrification of the lamp bulb and a condensation of the filling gas are substantially prevented at said increased power. A lighting unit with such a high-pressure gas discharge lamp is further described, as is a power supply unit for operating the lamp. This not only considerably improves the spectral properties of the light, but the lamp also operates at a higher operating voltage because of the higher gas pressure, so that a correspondingly higher lamp power is achieved for a given lamp current. On the other hand, given the same lamp power, a weaker current is required, so that the electrodes will have a substantially longer useful life. All this is achieved without any change in the geometry of the lamp.
