    • A device comprises a needle, probe, holster, and tissue collection chamber. A motor simultaneously powers a vacuum pump, translates and rotates a cutter, and translates a plunger. The needle includes a piercing tip and an interior shelf that divides the needle into a cutter lumen and lateral lumen. The cutter and shelf include apertures configured to mince a portion of a tissue specimen that has been severed by the cutter and forced through the apertures by compressive force from the plunger as well as vacuum force. The apertures of the shelf and the apertures of the rotating cutter cooperate to shear the tissue being compressed by the plunger. The minced tissue is then transported to the tissue collection chamber under vacuum force with the assistance of a fluid flush. Collected minced tissue may then be further processed as desired for a given medical treatment or procedure.

    • A biopsy system comprises a localization assembly, a biopsy device, and a targeting cube. At least a portion of the biopsy device is insertable through a targeting cube, which is insertable into a selected aperture of a grid plate. The targeting cube comprises a body defined by faces, with guide passageways that originate and terminate at the faces and pass through the body of the targeting cube to accommodate insertion of a part of the biopsy device. An exterior wiper retainer of the targeting cube engages the grid plate to permit insertion of the targeting cube into a selected aperture of the grid plate while resisting withdrawal of the targeting cube from the grid plate. Internal wiper retainers in the guide passageways permit insertion of part of the biopsy device through a selected guide passageway while resisting withdrawal of the inserted part from the targeting cube.

    • A biopsy device may include a needle, a cutter, and a handpiece. A vacuum pump may be provided in the handpiece for providing a vacuum to the needle and/or to the cutter. A motor may be provided in the handpiece to drive the vacuum pump and/or the cutter. A biopsy device may also include a valving mechanism within the handpiece for selectively communicating a vacuum and/or atmospheric air to the needle. A clutching mechanism may selectively provide communication between a motor and the cutter. Portions of a valving mechanism and a clutching mechanism may be integrally formed. A clutching and valving mechanism may be driven by a first motor; and a cutter and vacuum pump by a second motor. A biopsy device may include batteries for powering motors. A biopsy device may thus provide vacuum and power from within a handpiece, such that the biopsy device is tetherless.

    • A biopsy device and method are provided for obtaining a tissue sample, such as a breast tissue biopsy sample. The biopsy device includes a disposable probe assembly with an outer cannula having a distal piercing tip, a cutter lumen, and a cutter tube that rotates and translates past a side aperture in the outer cannula to sever a tissue sample. The biopsy device also includes a reusable handpiece with an integral motor and power source to make a convenient, untethered control for use with ultrasonic imaging. The reusable handpiece incorporates a probe oscillation mode to assist when inserting the distal piercing tip into tissue. The motor also actuates a vacuum syringe in coordination with movement of the cutter tube to provide vacuum assistance in prolapsing tissue and retracting tissue samples.

    • A biopsy device comprises a cannula having a transverse tissue receiving aperture and a cutter that is movable relative to the cannula to sever tissue protruding through the aperture. A first valve assembly comprises a first valve body and a first actuator. The first valve body has a first port, a second port, and a third port. The first port is in fluid communication with either atmospheric air or a pressurized medium. The second port is in fluid communication with the cannula. The third port is in fluid communication with a vacuum source. The first actuator is translatable relative to the first valve body to selectively couple either the first port or the third port with the second port. An optional second valve assembly is operable to selectively couple the cannula with either a source of saline or the first valve assembly.
