    • A manhole cover includes a security device, preferably located beneath an upper surface thereof. A cover removing apparatus includes a magnetic element to hold the cover, when a pin of the apparatus is engaged with the security device of the cover. A push force, which may be applied through a port in the upper surface of the cover, for example, by the pin member, can deform, and thereby unlock, a spring-loaded locking member of the security device. The security device may further include at least one elongate member, which is caused to move from a first position to a second position, by the push force, in order to disengage the cover from a manhole, so that the cover may be removed from the manhole.

    • There is provided an adaptive semi-synchronous parallel processing system and method, which may be adapted to various data analysis applications such as flow cytometry systems. By identifying the relationship and memory dependencies between tasks that are necessary to complete an analysis, it is possible to significantly reduce the analysis processing time by selectively executing tasks after careful assignment of tasks to one or more processor queues, where the queue assignment is based on an optimal execution strategy. Further strategies are disclosed to address optimal processing once a task undergoes computation by a computational element in a multiprocessor system. Also disclosed is a technique to perform fluorescence compensation to correct spectral overlap between different detectors in a flow cytometry system due to emission characteristics of various fluorescent dyes.

    • A detector (100) detects the presence of a watermark in an information signal. The information signal is correlated with an expected watermark (Wi) for each of a plurality of relative positions of the information signal with respect to the watermark to derive a set of correlation results (64). A metric, such as a mean square value, is calculated for a cluster of the results (64). The metric is compared with a threshold h which is indicative of the cluster representing the presence of a correlation peak. The metric can be calculated for clusters formed at every position in the results buffer (64). Alternatively, the metric can be calculated only for a cluster which is identified as being a likely correlation peak.

    • An information signal includes a plurality of watermarks (Wi) which together define a payload of data, such as a rights information. A detector (100) detects the presence (60-62) of each of the plurality of watermarks in the information signal and provides an output (101-103) which can be used to determine (70, 75) the payload represented by the watermarks. A measure of confidence in the accuracy of the payload represented by the watermarks is calculated (110) using information (104-106) from the detection stages (60-62). This provides a measure of the quality of the payload to any equipment which relies on the payload results, such as a Digital Rights Management (DRM) system. Information about the shape of correlation peaks obtained in the detection stages (60-62) can be used to derive the measure of confidence in the accuracy of the payload.
