    • A method of applying at least one liquid to a surface of a carrier includes providing an extrusion-type application head having a slot with an outlet portion and a back edge portion, pushing the outlet portion of the slot toward the surface of the carrier, continuously conveying the carrier along a surface of the back edge portion of the head, and thereafter applying a liquid undercoating in excess to the carrier surface in advance upstream of the head relative to a conveyance direction of the carrier so as to form a liquid undercoating layer on the carrier surface. The liquid is continuously jetted from the slot so that the liquid is applied to the liquid undercoating. As a result, air does not form between the liquid undercoating and the subsequent liquid applied, and the applied liquid has a uniform thickness despite the application speed of the liquid (e.g., conveyance speed of the carrier) being great.

    • An application device for applying a liquid, such as a photographic photosensitive liquid, to the surface of a flexible carrier that is continuously moving on path rollers, while an outlet portion of a slot of an extrusion-type application head is pushed toward the surface of the flexible carrier. The application head has an outlet portion including two end portions having an intermediate portion therebetween, with the top surface of the intermediate portion horizontally lying below top surfaces of the end portions. As the carrier passes over the outlet portion, a gap between the side edge portions of the carrier and the surfaces of the end portions is less than the width of the gap between the central portion of the carrier and the surface of the intermediate portion. Further, first and second wall surfaces vertically extend up from the surface of the intermediate portion to couple respective surfaces of the end portions so that the solvent applied to the side edge portions of the carrier is prevented from being spread to the central portion of the carrier as the carrier moves past the application head. The application device prevents a solvent, which is applied in advance to side edge portions of the carrier, from spreading into the central portion of the carrier where the liquid is to be applied.

    • A memory medium for information storage and reproduction and an apparatus for reading information from the memory medium are set forth herein. The memory medium includes a solid storage layer formed of a pyroelectric and electro-optic material, and information is stored in the medium through local residual polarization of the layer owing to the pyroelectrical property of the material. The apparatus includes: (a) a light source for emitting a laser beam toward the medium; (b) a power source for applying electric power to the light source; (c) an optical system for converging the beam on the layer, so as to form a beam spot with a suitable size; (d) a sensing device for detecting an intensity of a laser beam reflected by, or a laser beam transmitted through, the layer, the intensity being changed owing to variation in refractive index of the layer due to the local residual polarization, the changes in the refractive index being based on the electro-optical property of the material, the sensing device generating a detection signal indicative of an intensity of the detected beam; and (e) a control device responsive to the sensing device, for generating a reproduction signal corresponding to the detection signal, the reproduction signal being used for the information reproduction.
