    • Apparatus and related methods for facilitating volumetric ultrasonic scanning of a breast are described. In one preferred embodiment, a generally cone-shaped radial scanning template having a vertex and a wide opening angle is provided, the radial scanning template having a slot-like opening extending outward from the vertex through which an ultrasound transducer scans the breast as the radial scanning template is rotated. In another preferred embodiment, a flexible membrane for compressing a skin surface of the breast is provided, the flexible membrane being mounted on a mechanical assembly such as a roller assembly to form a slot-like opening through which an ultrasound transducer directly contacts the skin surface, the flexible membrane rising and falling relative to the skin surface but not moving laterally as the slot-like opening and ultrasound transducer move laterally across the compressed breast, whereby stabilization of the breast and direct transducer-skin contact are concurrently achieved.

    • An apparatus and related methods are described for obtaining volumetric ultrasound scans of a breast of a supine patient in which a fluid reservoir including a bottom flexible membrane contacts an upward-facing surface of the breast. The fluid reservoir is filled with water or other suitable acoustically conductive fluid until the bottom membrane covering the breast is submerged. A transducer surface of an ultrasound probe is submerged in the fluid and moved over and/or around the breast area to obtain the ultrasound scans. Patient comfort is promoted, the patient being able to relax in a supine position during the procedure with a substantially uncompressed breast. Imaging near the chest wall is enhanced, especially for patients having smaller-sized breasts. Also described are preferred embodiments using multiple transducer surfaces in which shadowing effects are reduced.

    • A system, method, and computer program product for computer-aided detection of suspicious lesions in digital mammograms is described, wherein single-view feature vectors from a first digital mammogram are processed in a classification algorithm along with information computed from a plurality of related digital mammograms to assign an overall probability of suspiciousness to potentially suspicious lesions in the first digital mammogram. In one preferred embodiment, a greater probability of suspiciousness is determined where there are similar corresponding lesions in the first digital mammogram and in an alternate digital mammogram view of the same breast. In another preferred embodiment, a lesser probability of suspiciousness is found where there are symmetric lesions or structures located in the first digital mammogram and a digital mammogram of the opposite breast. In another preferred embodiment, a lesser probability of suspiciousness is found where there are similar lesions or structures located in the first digital mammogram and a digital mammogram of the same breast taken months or years earlier in time. In another preferred embodiment, the nipple location, which serves as a reference location point across different digital mammogram, is located using an algorithm that takes into account the chest wall, the skin line of the breast, and the general orientation of the fibrous breast tissue in the digital mammogram relative to the chest wall.

    • X-ray images are displayed at both high-resolution and high-illumination with annotation superimposed in registration therewith to point out suspected abnormalities identified through a process in which the x-ray images are digitized and the digitized information is subjected to feature extraction processing. For example, the x-ray images are displayed at high resolution and high illumination in the form of x-ray film images displayed on a light box while the annotation information is selectively superimposed on the same image by a separate imaging system co-acting with the light box. In this manner, the radiologist can view either the x-ray film alone, in the conventional manner, or the same x-ray film, at the same position and at the same high resolution and at the same or substantially the same illumination level but with annotation information superimposed and in registration therewith. In addition, alternative ways are disclosed for displaying the high resolution x-ray image and for selectively superimposing the annotation information thereon.
