    • An area-protection system uses an active-array antenna to generate a high-power millimeter-wave wavefront to deter an intruder within a protected area. One or more reflectors may be positioned within the protected area to help retain energy of the wavefront within the area. The area-protection system may include an intrusion-detection subsystem to detect presence of the intruder within the protected area and to generate a detection signal. The active-array antenna may generate the high-power millimeter-wave wavefront in response to the detection signal. In some embodiments, the intrusion-detection subsystem may detect the presence of a tag worn by the intruder, and may instruct the array antenna to refrain from generating the wavefront when tag is authenticated. In some embodiments, an illuminator may be used detect intruder movement based on return signals. In some embodiments, the array antenna includes semiconductor wafers arranged together on a substantially flat surface.

    • The phase of a pulsed test signal is measured with reference to a reference signal of constant frequency by sampling the test signal at times determined by transitions in the reference signal and comparing the sampled test signal with the output of a phase accumulator clocked by the reference signal. A resulting measurement signal represents a difference in the number of transitions occurring in the sampled test signal and a reference state signal output by the phase accumulator. The measurement signal may be averaged and integrated to obtain an error signal which may then be filtered to provide a control signal for an oscillator. A digital frequency synthesizer is provided by frequency dividing the output of the oscillator by a constant multiple to obtain the test signal and integrating an offset signal in addition to the averaged measurement signal so that the operating frequency of the oscillator is offset from a nominal frequency by an amount determined by the offset signal. The digital frequency synthesizer is suitable for use in a synchronous equipment timing source within a telecommunications multiplexer operating at a line transmission rate of 155.52 MHz.

    • A system and method to optimize processor performance and minimizing average thread latency by selectively loading a cache when a program state, resources required for execution of a program or the program itself change, is described. An embodiment of the invention supports a “cache priming program” that is selectively executed for a first thread/program/sub-routine of each process. Such a program is optimized for situations when instructions and other program data are not yet resident in cache(s), and/or whenever resources required for program execution or the program itself changes. By pre-loading the cache with two resources required for two instructions for only a first thread, average thread latency is reduced because the resources are already present in the cache. Since, such a mechanism is carried out only for one thread in a program cycle, pitfalls of a conventional general pre-fetch scheme that involves parsing of the program in advance to determine which resources and instructions will be needed at a later time, are avoided.
