    • A bicycle hydraulic disc brake master cylinder includes a housing having a bar clamp at one end configured for fastening the housing to a bicycle handle bar, the bar clamp receiving the handle bar along a clamp axis. A handle is pivotably connected to the housing to pivot about a pivot axis in operative association with a piston train to impart a drive force on the piston train. The handle defines a finger receptacle receiving at least one finger of a user defining an effective force point at a select distance from a distal end of the handle. A select ideal finger actuation path for the at least one finger of a user begins at a start point at the effective finger force point with the handle at an engagement point where the handle begins to drive the piston train against operative fluid resistance and extends along a line from the start point at a select angle relative to the clamp axis. A pivotable connection is provided between the handle and the housing and is located on the housing relative to the clamp axis so that with the handle actuated by a force applied to the effective finger force point along this select ideal actuation path, a mechanical advantage to the user resulting from the handle actuation does not diminish more than three percent as the handle is pivoted between the engagement point and a fully actuated position.

    • The invention provides methods for stabilizing 5-azacytidine against hydrolysis in plasma. By extracting the 5-azacytidine into acetonitrile and zinc sulfate, the 5-azacytidine can be stored for at least about 3 hours at about room temperature, and for at least about 4 days at about −70° C. If the acetonitrile is removed and evaporated to dryness, the 5-azacytidine in the resulting residue is stable for at least about 14 months at about −70° C. The invention also provides methods for determining the 5-azacytidine in acetonitrile, or in the acetonitrile residue, using, for example, high-performance liquid chromatography. The methods of the invention permit a significant time interval between the initial processing of the whole blood sample and the time of 5-azacytidine determination.

    • The present invention teaches a marker useful for detection and measurement of free radical damage. Specifically, the invention takes advantage of alterations which occur to the N-terminus of the albumin molecule, a circulating protein in human blood, in the presence of free radicals. These alterations effect the ability of the N-terminus of the albumin molecule to bind metals. Methods for detecting and quantifying this alteration include evaluating and quantifying the cobalt binding capacity of an albumin-containing sample, analysis and measurement of the ability of albumin to bind exogenous cobalt, detection and measurement of the presence of copper in a purified albumin sample and use of an immunological assay specific to the altered form of serum albumin which occurs following free radical damage. Also taught by the present invention is the use of the peptide Asp Ala His Lys and the compound Asp-Ala-His-Lys-R, wherein R is any chemical group capable of producing a detectable signal when a metal ion capable of binding to the N-terminus of naturally-occurring albumin is bound to the compound, for detection and quantitation of the marker. Methods of the present invention also include use of the marker as a “biochemical tag,” thereby allowing for sensitive detection and measurement of the efficacy of clinical drugs and therapeutics which result in the generation of free radicals or which act to limit free radical damage. The marker also acts as a “biological tag” of a process implicated in a wide array of diseases and conditions and, accordingly, may be used to monitor and assess such diseases and conditions. Finally, the invention provides antibodies, immunoassays, and kits for use in detecting or quantitating the marker.
