    • A coin testing apparatus includes a coin passageway and means for examining the authenticity of a coin. A thread-catching device is located in the passageway on the inside of a bend in the coin path and upstream of the coin-examining means. The thread-catching device comprises a resilient member which is secured against a part of the wall of the passageway. The resilient member includes a thread-holding portion which lies against the said wall and an entry portion adjacent the thread-holding portion which is spaced from the wall and diverges from the wall towards the edge of the outer catching device.

    • A coin sorting and access control mechanism for a vending machine comprising a central wall member having chute-forming members pivotally mounted on either side thereof and biased toward the central wall. Each chute is provided, at the upper portion thereof, with a funnel located so as to receive coins inserted through a slotted coin plate by a consumer wishing to gain access to the product being vended. The coin mechanism includes a funnel having multiple-apertured coin contacting surfaces which lead to coin transfer chutes. The coin transfer chutes, and the central wall therebetween, are provided with elongated slots extending therealong. The chute walls are also provided with surfaces which minimize coin surface area contact. Thus, the funnels, slots, and coin contacting surfaces minimize any surface tension which might arise in moisture between the mechanism and coins inserted into the machine.

    • A unique coin chute to receive, retain, and dispense coins in such a manner as to guarantee that no two adjacently stored coins have aligned edges. The invention comprises a chute having two intersecting arms. Coins are alternately placed into each of the two arms such that no coin abutts an aligned coin but instead is supported by and supports coins with which it is angled. A novel bi-directional mechanical switch alternates the depositing of the coins into each of two channels which orient the coins for ultimate disposition into an associated arm of the chute.

    • Mechanism for successively feeding coins or the like from a single passage alternately into each of a pair of receiving channels or storage tubes is provided, which employs a rockable coin deflector assembly that is movable into blocking relationship to one channel by entry of a coin into that channel, releasable latching means for holding such deflector assembly in blocking relationship to that one channel, and a second rockable assembly associated with the other channel and adapted to release the latching means for movement of the first mentioned deflector assembly away from its blocking position whenever a coin enters the other channel. The mechanism also includes a deflector forming a part of the second assembly for blocking the other channel to divert coins to a third channel when said one and said other channels are both filled with stored coins.
