    • A dynamically re-configurable multi-stroke internal combustion engine, comprised of programmable computer processor controlled engine components for decoupling the four classic strokes of an internal combustion engine and electronically managing engine cylinder components including such cylinder components as electronically controllable valves, fuel injection and air fuel mixture ignition, allowing additional engine cylinder unit component states and thus cylinder strokes to be independently altered or re-sequenced by computer control to provide alternate engine modes of operation. Some alternate engine modes are facilitated by addition of a compressed air storage reservoir to receive cylinder generated compressed air or transfer compressed air to cylinder units in other modes to increase engine power, efficiency or utility. Sensor input and on-demand requirements drive control logic to manage engine strokes through control of individual cylinder component states. Dynamic reconfiguration of individual component states provides re-generative engine energy modes, boost power modes, and mixed modes which use compressed air stored energy re-introduced for alternate cylinder state sequences and alternate engine modes of operation which add utility and efficiency to otherwise fixed sequence multi-stroke power generation in internal combustion engines.

    • A device for switching a combustion engine from a propelling mode to a braking mode, wherein the combustion engine has at least one intake valve and at least one exhaust valve per cylinder, includes a cam shaft for actuating the intake and exhaust valves of each cylinder and a hydraulic linkage made of transmitting pistons and receiving pistons for connecting the cam shaft to the intake and exhaust valves of each cylinder. The cam shaft has a first intake cam for actuating a first transmitting piston and a second intake cam for actuating a second transmitting piston, the first and the second transmitting pistons controlling the intake valve, and a first exhaust cam for actuating a third transmitting piston and a second exhaust cam for actuating a fourth transmitting piston, the third and fourth transmitting pistons controlling the exhaust valves. A control system has a non-rotatable control slide connected between the transmitting and receiving pistons. The control slide has transverse bores for connecting and disconnecting the transmitting and receiving pistons. The device further includes a hydraulic system for switching the control slide from a first operating position for the propelling mode into a second operating position for the braking mode.

    • An engine is selectively operable in two- and four-cycle modes by varying the timing to open and close intake and exhaust valves on the top of a cylinder. The engine comprises first and second valve actuating mechanisms for opening and closing the intake and exhaust valves, a selective operating mechanism for operating the first valve actuating mechanism to open and close the intake and exhaust valves while the second valve actuating mechanism is disabled, and for operating the second valve actuating mechanism to open and close the intake and exhaust valves while the first valve actuating mechanism is disabled, and a rotation transmitting mechanism for transmitting rotation of a crankshaft of the engine, each time the crankshaft makes two revolutions, to the first valve actuating mechanism through the selective operating mechanism when the engine operates in the four-cycle mode, and for transmitting rotation of the crankshaft, each time the crankshaft makes one revolution, to the second valve actuating mechanism through the selective operating mechanism when the engine operates in the two-cycle mode. The rotation transmitting mechanism starts to transmit rotation of the crankshaft to the first and second valve actuating mechanism when the crankshaft has been angularly moved through a predetermined angle.

    • The invention relates to a thermal engine provided with inlet and exhaust valves and with a system for controlling said engine comprising a computer which regulates opening and closure of said valves and which imposes on said engine an operation close to the one corresponding to minimum specific fuel consumption. According to the invention, this assembly is characterized in that said engine is essentially of the four-stroke cycle type, in that said system comprises means adapted to detect overloads of the engine and means adapted to cause the engine to operate exceptionally in two-stroke mode, these latter means being actuated by said detection means when the detected overload exceeds a predetermined threshold so that in that case the engine passes to two-stroke operation, four-stroke operation being resumed as soon as the overload has disappeared. The invention leads to obtaining a low consumption of fuel for increased power.
