    • A continuously variable automatic drive has a front driving sprocket and a rear driven sprocket. Each of these sprockets has a housing and a plurality of involute-shaped toothed segments, each having a leading end and a trailing free end. The toothed segments are symmetrically spaced around their housings and pivotally attached to their housings about their leading ends. Each toothed segment is movable between a first position where the trailing free end is pivoted inwardly closest to the housing and the effective diameter of the sprocket is smallest and a second position where the trailing free end is pivoted outwardly farthest from the housing and the effective diameter of the sprocket is largest. The highest gear ratio is produced when the front driving sprocket is at the second position and the rear driven sprocket at the first position. The lowest gear ratio is produced when the front driving sprocket is at the first position and the rear driven sprocket is at the second position. The springs are biased so that the gearing defaults to the highest gear ratio, at the relaxed, neutral position, where no force is applied to the driving sprocket.

More particularly, a variable sprocket transmission for a multi-speed bicycle is provided which can be smoothly and easily shifted without noise, is reliable, and can be easily used by both experienced and novice bicyclists. The variable sprocket transmission of the present invention can be manually shifted through a sequentially ordered set of distinct speed ratios using a single shift lever or, in the alternative, can be automatically shifted without input from the bicycle rider based on measured operating parameters.

    • A continuously variable transmission includes a power input driving a sun gear which in turn drives a plurality of planetary gears. Within each planetary gear is mounted an over-rolling clutch. The planet gear is free to rotate about its raceway in one direction and is locked from rotation in the opposite direction. The shaft mountings for each planetary gear are suitably journalled in a carrier ring rotatably mounted within the housing. An internal gear, integrally mounted within the output housing, meshes with the planetary gears and is driven by them. An eccentric system, comprised of two nested eccentrics within the housing and anchored to an axle, controls the degree of oscillation imparted to the planetary gear raceway shafts. The eccentric system is continuously positionable so as to increase the rotation of the input sun gear from a one-to-one ratio up to the maximum designed output. As the eccentricity is increased, the planetary gear system superimposes a pulse drive on the sun gear that exponentially multiplies the drive rotation rate. Thus, the output housing is driven at a greater rate of rotation than the planetary carrier. When the eccentrics are at the zero eccentricity position, the transmission operates as a direct drive with no internal gear motion.

    • A transmission means for transmitting power between input and output drives in which a rack and pinion gear assembly and a cam adjacent the pinion cooperate with the drives to provide a variable gear ratio therebetween. The gear assembly includes inner and outer gear rack pairs, in which such gear rack pair has oppositely facing toothed rack portions which are spaced apart sufficiently to receive the pinion gear and cam therebetween, with an outer surface of the cam adjacent at least one of the oppositely facing toothed rack portions. Resilient connectors interconnect the end portions of each pair of toothed rack portions to as to permit limited resilient movement between the rack portions of each pair. A rotor engages the rack pairs to transmit that power therebetween. Preferably, a gear ratio changer can vary spacing between input and output axes in such a direction as to provide a favourable change in effective radius of action of the drive in addition to the gear ratio resulting from the rack and pinion gear assembly.
