    • A coolant system for a machine tool is disclosed. Sockets on the machine tool are equipped with check valves biased to a closed position. When a tool is inserted into a socket, an actuating member opens the check valve to enable coolant to flow through a conduit in the tool to the cutting edge of the tool. Tools whose cutting edges do not require coolant are not equipped with the actuating member. In addition, a distributor is provided for use in the coolant system of a machine tool having a turret. The distributor is mounted on the turret and is coaxial with the axis of rotation of the turret. Coolant is piped into the center of a distributing member having an outlet on a cylindrical side surface. A receiving member has a cylindrical chamber in which the distributing member is rotatably disposed. The receiving member has a plurality of radially disposed passages which lead from the receiving member to the tool receiving sockets on the turret. Coolant flows only to a tool in the working position because only the passage leading to that tool is aligned with the outlet of the distributing member. As the turret is rotated to index a different tool to the working position, coolant is ported to the passage leading to the tool then in the working position.

    • Workpiece blanks to be machined are transported on a conveyor past a bank of machine tools operating in parallel, each blank resting on an individual carriage which is slippably entrained by the conveyor so as to be arrestable at a stop in line with a machine tool by an escapement-type rocker in response to a signal from a sensing switch detecting the presence of such a blank on an arriving carriage. A gantry-type manipulator picks up the blank and delivers it to the associated machine tool while removing therefrom a workpiece already machined and depositing it on the waiting carriage in a position laterally offset from the one previously occupied by the blank. Another sensing switch at each stop, upon detecting the presence of a workpiece already machined on a carriage, lets that carriage continue on its way without actuation of the corresponding manipulator.

    • Plastic ring-like members are press-fitted over elongated work stock members to be fed into a screw machine for operation thereon by the screw machine. The elongated work stock members with attached plastic ring-like elements are received in stock tubes associated with a screw machine. The ring-like members rotate with the work stock members within the stock tubes and function as sound deadening means preventing rattling and scraping of the work stock members within the stock tubes. Additionally, the ring-like members reduce damage to the work stock members, stock tubes and screw machine.
