    • A spark plug 1 includes an insulator 2, a metal shell 3, a center electrode 5 and a ground electrode 27. A spark discharge gap 33 is formed between a front end portion 28 of the center electrode 5 and the ground electrode 27. The metal shell 3 has a through hole 29 therein and a metal convex portion 21 inwardly radially projecting in the through hole 29. The metal convex portion 21 includes a convex rearward face 30, a convex inner circumferential face 31 and a convex forward face 32. The through hole 29 has an inner diameter A (mm) at a front end side inner circumferential face 40, which is located at the front end side with respect to the convex forward face 32. The insulator 2 is inserted in the through hole 29 and has a first insulator taper portion 14, a second insulator taper portion 36 and a base 37 between the taper portions. The present invention satisfies the following representations: G≦(A−B)/2; A≧7.3; and 2≦XX≦4, where “B” (mm) is an outer diameter of a border K between an insulator front end portion 38 and the second insulator taper portion 36, where “G” (mm) is a distance of a spark discharge gap 33, and where “XX” (mm) is a length from a very-end portion FF of the convex inner circumferential face 31 to the border K in the axial C1 direction.

    • To provide a spark plug with improved heat resistance and an internal combustion engine in which that spark plug is mounted where there is good conduction of the heat near the opening on the combustion chamber side of the mounting hole for the spark plug provided in the engine and the effects of thermal stress occurring near that opening are mitigated. A cylindrical part without threads formed thereon is provided on the leading end side of a metal housing of a spark plug and the thermal stress applied to a mounting hole is mitigated by avoiding close contact with the mounting hole of an engine head. Furthermore, the spark plug has a mounting structure in which the leading end surface of the cylindrical part is disposed 1.55 mm or more to the base end side in a mounting hole in the direction of the axial line O with respect to the wall surface inside the combustion chamber. By this means, the metal housing does not easily take up the heat that accompanies combustion of the air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber at the cylindrical, part so there may be good heat conduction.

    • A spark plug for an internal combustion engine is provided which includes a hollow cylindrical metal shell with an open end portion to be exposed to a combustion chamber of the engine, a ground electrode joined to the metal shell, a center electrode disposed in the metal housing to define a spark gap between itself and the ground electrode. The spark plug also includes a stream shaper geometrically formed on an outer periphery of the open end portion of the metal shell to shape tumble vortexes of air-fuel mixture into vortex streams oriented toward a central portion of the combustion chamber. This ensures the stability of orientation of the tumble vortexes to control a flow of sparks, thereby enhancing the ignitability of the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber.

Those sliding discharges are on outer large conical or cylindrical surfaces of insulation parts (4) and (5) with high diameters. The outside low voltage electrode (2) is connected to a metallic body of this spark plug and to the outer conical or cylindrical surface of the outside insulation part (4). The inside cylindrical or conical low voltage electrode (3) is connected to the inner conical or cylindrical surface of the inside insulation part (5).

    • An electrical igniter has an outer shell with a tungsten forward end which forms an annular outer electrode. A central rod extends axially within the shell and has a tungsten forward end forming an inner electrode which is separated from the outer electrode by a semiconductive surface discharge path. The inner and outer electrodes both have chromium diffused into the tungsten to form surface layers that are oxidation resistant at high temperatures. The electrodes are made by placing the tungsten forward ends in a furnace in a chromium rich atmosphere between 1000 and 1200 degrees Centrigrade for between 10 to 24 hours and allowing them to cool in the furnace. Chromium is removed from the rear ends of the tungsten parts before joining them to the rear parts of the electrodes which are of different metals.

    • An axially elongated member is provided with an antechamber at one end thereof for receivably engaging the firing end of a spark ignition device. The axially elongated member includes a diverging-converging exit nozzle in its other end and a narrow bore or port extending between and connecting the antechamber with the exit nozzle. The nozzle''s exit aperture is formed in the end face of the member and thus defines an annular baffle means axially displaced from the point where the narrow bore opens into the exit nozzle. Because of its diverging-converging construction the interior recess of the nozzle is enlarged with respect to the diameter of its exit aperture which latter, in turn, is enlarged with respect to the diameter of the narrow bore or port. The axial member further includes means for preventing a fluid flowing along a wall surface perpendicular to the axis thereof from flowing over the end face of its other end and entering the enlarged interior recess of the exit nozzle.
