    • An electrical connector includes a first contact module and a second contact module adjacent the first contact module. Each contact module has a plurality of ground and signal contacts. Each ground contact and signal contact includes a mating portion, a mounting portion, and an intermediate portion extending between the mating portion and the mounting portion. In each contact module, the intermediate portions of the ground contacts are disposed in a first common plane and the intermediate portions of the signal contacts are disposed in a second common plane that is spaced from the first common plane. The first contact modules and the second contact modules are arranged such that two adjacent signal contacts of the first and second contact modules, respectively, define a differential signal pair such that the intermediate portions of the adjacent signal contacts are spaced more closely than the intermediate portions of two adjacent ground contacts of the first and second contact modules, respectively.

    • The electrical connector assembly includes a female connector portion which is mountable to a first printed circuit board, such as a motherboard, and a male connector portion which is mechanically and electrically connected to a second printed circuit board, such as a daughterboard. The female connector portion includes a plurality of signal contacts arranged in two rows having a ground terminal, or conductive elastomer, positioned between the rows of signal contacts. The male connector portion preferably includes a flexible circuit having a solid groundplane separated by an dielectric insulator from an electrical trace thereon. The distance separating the groundplane from the trace and the width of the trace controls a characteristic impedance of the flexible circuit for matching to specific circuit requirements of the daughterboard and motherboard. Upon mechanical connection of the male connector portion to the female connector portion, the signal contacts electrically engage the trace on the flexible circuit and the groundplane electrically engages the ground terminal. The specific design of the connector assembly provides a controlled impedance, high signal contact density connector having reduced cross-talk and enhanced signal transmission, even at ultra high (UHF) signal transmission speeds.

    • Electrical connector 10 is used to terminate individual wires 6, 8 in two twisted wire pairs 2, 4. The connector includes an insulated housing with terminals 50 located in terminal receiving cavities 34 in the housing. The terminals 50 are inclined relative to parallel wire receiving channels 34 and paired terminals 50 for terminating individual wires of a the same twisted wire pair, 2 or 4 are spaced closer together than adjacent intermediate terminals associated with different wire pairs. Pairing inclined terminals 50 increases the coupling between wires in the same wire pair and increasing the spacing between terminals of different wire pairs reduces the capacitive cross talk between adjacent wire pairs. High frequency performance of the electrical connector 10 is thereby increased. A central cavity between terminal pairs increases the effective dielectric constant to further reduce crosstalk. Inclining the terminals 50 also allows the relative width of the terminals to be increased so that the strength of the housing 12 can be increased and the retention of the terminals 50 in the housing 12 can be improved.
