    • A superconductive conductor or cable comprising a core, which comprises at least one string of a ceramic, superconductive material, and where the core is encapsulated by a metal cap. In order to manufacture a conductor or a cable with an encapsulation, and in which it is possible as well during the manufacturing process as under the operation to maintain a controlled atmosphere around the superconductive core, at least one layer of not sintered, ceramic powderous material is provided between the cap and the core, which material has a higher sintering temperature than the superconductive material in the core. The superconductive core may be sintered for formation of the superconductive ceramics by placing in the tubular metal cap a starting material in powderous form, and shaped as a core in the other ceramic powder material and subsequently forgeing the the metal cap with its content, preferably by swaging at an ambient temperature, which is below the sintering temperature of the core.

    • A process for production of superconductor wire having multiple rings, comprising the steps of: preparing a silver mixture comprising a silver or silver-gold alloy mixed with a bonding agent, and a superconductor mixture comprising a superconductor powder with bonding agent; arranging both the silver mixture and the superconductor mixture in a extrusion die; extruding a wire having at least one ring of the superconductor mixture and one ring of the silver mixture in the radial direction; and heating the wire at the sinter temperature of the oxide superconductor so that the bonding agent is removed and the oxide superconductor powder and the silver powder are sintered. A superconductor wire comprising an inner core and an outer ring covering the core, wherein one of the ring on the core comprises a sintered silver powder and the other of the ring on the core comprises a sintered oxide superconductor powder.

    • The invention relates to a sheathing material for superconducting wires which are deformed during manufacture by drawing or a similar procedure. The superconducting material of the wires is composed of an oxide whose superconducting properties worsen during the deformation so that, in order to recover its original superconducting properties or to further improve them, the material must be subjected to a recovery heat treatment at temperatures above 940.degree. C.Customarily, silver is employed as the sheathing material for such wires. The recovery heat treatment is generally performed at temperatures around 900.degree. C. Experiments have shown that the optimum temperature range for a recovery heat treatment lies between about 940.degree. C. and 1030.degree. C. However, these temperatures were above the melting temperature of silver in an oxygen atmosphere. It is the object of the invention to find a sheathing material which has the favorable properties of silver but melts only at a temperature above the optimum temperature for the recovery heat treatment.This is accomplished according to the invention in that the sheathing material employed is a silver alloy whose melting point lies above the melting point of pure silver.

    • A method of producing a superconducting strip, comprising continuously passing a superconducting wire or tape through a mold, casting a molten stabilizing metal for said wire into said mold, cooling the molten stabilizing metal during its passage through said mold along the travelling path of said wire with said wire embedded therein to thereby solidify said molten stabilizing metal in close contact with said wire and continuously drawing the resultant superconducting strip from said mold; and an apparatus for practicing said method. The superconducting strip produced according to the present invention is free from breakage of the wire, has highly uniform and excellent properties and can be produced at lower cost than the conventional ones.
