    • An engine chain or belt tensioning system includes a tensioner pivot arm with a ratcheting means that includes backlash in an engine timing system. The tensioner system includes a tensioner pivot arm having a fixed pin, ratchet teeth, and a connection for a rotation-causing device, all being spaced radially outward from a pivoting feature. The pivoting feature and the fixed pin are positioned between two strands of a chain. An arm carrying a shoe extended outside the strands of chain and positioned to contact an outside portion of chain is pivotally mounted to the fixed pin. Rotation of the pivot arm causes the arm and shoe to draw inwards, imparting tension to the chain strand. The ratchet teeth allow free rotation of the tensioner arm in one direction, but not the other.

    • The invention is directed to a tensioner assembly for providing tensile force from a floating vessel at the surface of the ocean to the blowout preventer stack, or production tree, which is connected to the wellhead at the sea floor. The tensioner assembly compensates for vessel motion induced by wave action and heave and maintains a variable tension to the riser string alleviating the potential for compression and thus buckling or failure of the riser string. The tensioner assembly of the present invention includes a cylinder, a stop tube disposed with the cylinder, and a ram slidably engaged within the stop tube. The tensioner assembly also includes at least one gas, or air, transfer tube to create a pressurized air over hydraulic fluid arrangement to provide tensile force to the tensioner assembly.

    • A tensioner, in which an outer body and an inner body, which can deal with a tensioner mounting form required from various engines and a tension-imparting function, can be assembled, the inner body and a movement backward preventing mechanism, which form an inner body side unit, can be unitized in a shape by which press-fitting and assembling is easy, and its efficient assembling production can be performed. A body 22 of a tensioner 21 is composed of outer and inner bodies 23 and 24 of different members. The outer body 23 is provided with a tensioner mounting means and an inner body fitting hole 23a. The inner body 24 is provided with a plunger accommodating hole 24a into which a plunger 26 biased by a compression spring 27 was slidably fitted, and a movement backward preventing mechanism 32 for preventing the backward movement of the plunger 26 is incorporated into the inner body 24. The movement backward preventing mechanism 32 comprises a rack 26b formed on a part of the outer circumference of the plunger 26, a pawl body 32b pivotably supported with a pivot shaft 32a in a cutaway groove formed on a front end of the inner body 24, and a spring 31c, which biases a pawl of the pawl body 32b so that the pawl engages the rack 26b. An inner body side unit 33 composed of at least the inner body 24, the movement backward preventing mechanism 32, the compression spring 27 and the plunger 26, is adapted to be press-fitted and fixed into the inner body fitting hole 23a of the outer body 23.

An air-bleeder mechanism is provided for exhausting air in the oil chamber to the outside of the oil chamber. The purge valve P has a check valve function of permitting the exhaustion of the air in the oil chamber to the outside of the oil chamber but blocking admission of air into the oil chamber from the outside of the oil chamber and blocking discharging of the oil pressure in the oil chamber to the outside of the oil chamber. In addition, the volume of oil in the oil chamber may be decreased by a spring guide portion which is accommodated in the inside of the tensioner spring for guiding the tensioner spring.

    • A tensioner lever for an engine timing chain comprises a synthetic resin lever body including a shoe having a chain-contacting sliding surface, and a spring-receiving portion on the back of a shoe. A laminated sheet spring is fitted into a slot formed in the spring-receiving portion along the longitudinal direction of the lever. The synthetic resin lever body is pivoted on a pivot shaft mounted on an engine, and an end of the laminated sheet spring is locked into a groove in the pivot shaft so that the spring can be stressed and thereby exert a tensioning force on the chain through the tensioner lever. The tensioner lever produces stable and quiet operation of the chain, and is more compact and less expensive than a conventional tensioner.
