    • An overload coupling for the protection of drive trains on machines, particularly agricultural machines powered by a tractor, protects against overloading in at least one rotational direction. A coupling sleeve is mounted for rotation around a coupling hub of the overload coupling. Relative rotation between the hub and sleeve is about a coupling axis. A plurality of circumferentially spaced recesses are provided in the coupling hub which each contain a rotatably mounted rotor. The rotors are mounted about their own rotor axes which are parallel to but spaced apart from the coupling axis. Each rotor contains a radially movable driver cam which is spring-loaded and has cam surfaces for engaging detent grooves in the sleeve. With the driver cams engaged in the detent grooves, relative rotation between the hub and sleeve is resisted. By shaping the cam surfaces and adjacent abutment surfaces of the driver cams, the direction and force of disengagement can be set between the coupling hub and coupling sleeve.

    • A torque limiter having a locking stud which radially slides in a drive part enters an associated slot in the inner periphery of a driven part coaxial with the drive part under the action of a radial-thrust blade spring. When an excessive torque is present between the drive and driven parts, the stud tends to leave its housing to disengage the drive and driven parts and thereby it laterally and outwardly clears intermediate rollers in order to decrease the distance between the spring and the stud and so that the force applied by the spring shall not increase during such unlocking.Thus the unlocking is immediate and the oscillatory zone of the prior-art limiters is virtually eliminated.

    • A lubricant free low cost overload release clutch having a spring housing with an integral hub, a detector ring containing fixed detent bullets for engagement with springs in the housing on one side, and a bullet detent housing on the other side, together with spider cushion and shaft housing engaged for rotary turning with the bullet detent housing in response to the rotation of a shaft in the shaft housing. The release clutch responds to preset torque limits determined by spring tension. After a disengagement caused by excess torque, the clutch will reset by further rotation of the detent housing.

    • A torque limiting wrench is provided having an input member and an output member coupled to each other so as to limit the transmitted torque therebetween. The coupling is provided by spring rods supported in the output member surrounding the input member, the spring rods being arranged along a pitch circle disposed concentric with respect to the input member and, in the tension-free state, disposed within the zone of axial catches arranged on the circumference of a collar provided on the input member. When a sufficient input torque is admitted, the spring rods are bent outwardly by the flanks of the catches and out of the range of the catches when the predetermined torque is reached.

    • A positive locking differential mechanism that functions to compensate for the difference in driving wheel travel which occurs when turning or traveling over uneven ground, while at the same time functioning to prevent wheel-slip when one wheel loses traction. The differential comprises a spider and center cam assembly having a plurality of trunnions projecting radially from the spider. A plurality of fixed driving clutch teeth are disposed on each side of the spider. The internal diameter of the spider mounts the center cam in such a manner that the same may be rotated a limited, predetermined distance. The center cam is symmetric, having cam lifts on each side which include rounded surfaces that provide anti-friction ramps for disengaging driven clutch members mounted on each side of the spider and center cam assembly. The driven clutch members have clutch teeth which correspond to the clutch teeth of the spider and through which a driving torque is transmitted. The radially inward portions of the driven clutch teeth define disengaging cams which are adpated to mesh with the cams of the center cam member. Enlarged sections and corresponding slotted portions disposed between the clutch members and the spider-cam assembly at spaced intervals maintain the clutch members in a disengaged mode during relative movement between the clutch members and the spider-cam assembly.

    • A drive line, such as is used in agricultural equipment to drive various components, includes a rotating driveshaft that is connected to a driven shaft through a slip clutch that is coaxial with the two shafts and has clutch components that extend radially outwardly of the drive and driven shafts. A tubular shaft shield is coaxially and rotatably mounted around the drive shaft adjacent the clutch and includes an element with an annular external groove adjacent the clutch. A second tubular shield is coaxially mounted on the shaft shield and includes a bell-shaped housing that normally encloses the clutch, the outer shield having an internal annular groove opposite the external groove and being rotatable on and axially shiftable relative to the shaft shield. A plastic snap ring is mounted in the internal groove and seats in the external groove to axially lock the outer shield to the inner shield, the snap ring expanding upon the exertion of a predetermined amount of axial force on the outer shield to unseat from the external groove and permit axial shifting of the outer shield to a position wherein it provides access to the clutch components.

    • A torque limiting device for stopping a rotating operating shaft when a resisting torque exerted thereon exceeds a predetermined value. A housing having a stationary bowl mounted therein is provided; the operating shaft is mounted for rotation in the housing and extends through a tubular element which has a pinion wheel thereon operatively connected to an actuator device. An annular member is provided at one end of the tubular element and a plurality of rollers are arranged in the annular member and maintained in contact with a cam mounted for rotation to the operating shaft and out of contact with the bowl by a plurality of springs. At the other end of the tubular element is provided sloping surfaces which are shaped to mate with oppositely sloping surfaces provided on a driver mounted for rotation with the operating shaft. A spring is provided to normally maintain the sloping surfaces in mating engagement with each other and is calibrated so that if the resisting torque acting on the operating shaft exceeds a predetermined value, the sloping surfaces move out of mating engagement thereby displacing the cam relative to the annular member to wedge the rollers into engagement with bowl and bring the shaft to a stop.
