    • A method and apparatus for splicing a fresh stack of continuous pin-feed forms in a high-speed printer having fed therethrough an expended stock of continuous pin-feed forms, where the printer includes an input station at a recessed area. A slidable tray for supporting the fresh stack is pulled out of the printer, and a splicing station which is hingedly coupled to an upright wall portion attached to the tray is deployed external to the printer for splicing ease. The splicing station includes a spool of splicing tape which is disposed within a locating groove of a controlled depth, the forms being registered on locating pins on either side of the groove for accurate splicing upon pressing them centered on the tape. When the splice is complete, the spliced stack is fan-folded upon the tray, the splicing station folded back against the upright wall portion, and the tray returned within the recessed area.

    • An apparatus for winding magnetic tape into a cassette positions and holds a cassette case, extracts and retains leader tape, cuts and splices leader tape to magnetic tape, and winds magnetic tape onto a hub inside the cassette case. After a predetermined amount of magnetic tape has been wound on the hub, the magnetic tape is retained, cut, spliced to leader tape, and the extracted slack tape is wound into the cassette case. The tape retaining mechanism has a first and second tape retainer which separately hold the cut ends of leader tape, and a third tape retainer which holds the cut end of magnetic tape. The first and second tape retainers attach to the extracted leader tape, and are positioned with their attachment surfaces adjacent to an open guard panel of the cassette case. The tape retainer attachment surfaces hold tape in a manner that essentially closes the cassette case front cavity. Once the leader tape has been cut, either the first, the second, or both tape retainers are moved to separate the cut tape ends, but the new tape retainer attachment surface positions remain adjacent to the guard panel. In this way dust and foreign object contamination of the magnetic tape is minimized.

    • A multistation cassette loading apparatus 10 loads a predetermined amount of blank or pre-recorded magnetic tape into cassettes 12. Cassettes to be loaded are oriented and positioned on a conveyor 16 by an automatic feed mechanism 14. A loading mechanism 18 transfers each cassette to the first station of a four station turntable 20. At the first station, the leader tape 320 of the cassette is extracted. At the second station, the leader is oriented in a splice block 24 and is held in place by vacuum. The leader tape is cut into two sections of equal length by a cutter 34. At the third station, one section of the leader tape is spliced to the end of a reel of supply tape 38 by a spicer 40. A measured amount of supply tape is wound into the cassette at a constant tension. A cushion of air blown around the reel of tape in the cassette during winding reduces frictional heating from tape drag. After the measured amount of tape is loaded into the cassette, the supply tape is cut by another cutter 46. At the fourth station, the cut end of the supply tape is spliced to the other section of the leader tape by splicer 48. After the excess tape is wound into the cassette, it is unloaded from the turntable.

    • To eliminate the necessity for stapling together web portions which are derived, for example, from a rotary printing machine, and superimposed, and which should be joined together, one of the web portions is deflected in a separate path and has a strip of adhesive applied transversely to the direction of movement, for example by passing the web portion between a pair of rollers, one of which has adhesive applied thereto. The web is passed free from contact with the two rollers of the pair, and the uncoated roller, at least, is formed with a projecting strip providing an impression or counter strip to press the web portion against the adhesive coating on the other roller to thereby apply an adhesive strip thereon. The two web portions are then guided into contact with each other and folded in the folding apparatus transversely to the movement at a fold line (19). The projecting strip need not be continuous, but may be a row of projecting bumps or teeth (FIGS. 3, 4) which cooperate with similar bumps and teeth on the other roller, or with a strip.
