    • A continuous tube T is formed by spirally-winding an extruded thermoplastic ribbon R having mating edges which are joined together to form a spiral seam and having at least one reinforcing rib 3 which, when in its spiral wrapped form, projects radially out from the tube. At predetermined lengths, the tube is cut and at the same time the outer surfaces of the tube on each side of the cut are shaped to facilitate handling and interconnecting of pipe section 1 thus formed. At least one end of the pipe has an annular groove 6 at a uniform distance from that end. This groove is formed by cutting a path through each of the radially extending reinforcing ribs intersecting its annular path. An elastomeric O-ring 8 engages the outer surface of the pipe and the axial movement of the O-ring is restrained by the walls of the groove formed by the radially extending reinforcing ribs. An apparatus 30 for cutting the tube at predetermined lengths into pipe sections while the tube is proceeding out of the spirally-winding operation also imparts to the outer surfaces the desired shape as well as cuts the groove for the elastomeric O-ring. This apparatus performs this cutting and shaping operation without interrupting the continuous forming of the tube from the spirally-wound thermoplastic ribbon.

    • Method and apparatus for continuously-developing multi-layer tubing from plural ribbons of wrapping material of indefinite length layered in seriatim upon a continuously-formed mandrel serving as a temporary supportive base for the tubing. A driven cylindrical winding mandrel is rotatable about its longitudinal axis and has a plurality of longitudinally-extending serrations on its exterior periphery. A stationary driving helix is operatively associated with the winding mandrel means for feeding a workpiece in ribbon form through the driving helix. Initial pressure means proximate the driving helix allows the continuous curling of the workpiece radially inwardly into adjacent helical convolutions about the winding mandrel. This impresses serrations on the convolutions mating with the winding mandrel serrations in the generation of the helical coil configuration and the definition of a developing formed mandrel as a supportive base. The driving helix is the means for progressing the formed mandrel longitudinally of the winding mandrel. The interengagement of the mating serrations of the winding and formed mandrels imparts a positive rotative force to the developing formed mandrel. Unreeling means downstream of the initial pressure means allows the in seriatim spiral feeding of a plurality of ribbons for forming successive contiguous helical convolutions in the buildup of a tubing on the winding mandrel. Supplemental pressure means presses the contiguous layers radially inwardly relative to the winding mandrel. Heating means fuses the enwrapped layers. Means allows the removing of the formed mandrel from interiorly of the finally-developed fused self-sustaining tubing.

The apparatus further includes a roller engageable with the helical rib on the tube opposite one of the rolls to flatten the rib in zones where it is desired to sever the tube into shorter lengths and to provide such shorter lengths with smooth ends.

    • A wire preforming assembly is fixedly mounted on a circular turntable having thereon a plurality of bobbins dispersed in an array to provide a plurality of wires to the assembly equally spaced around its periphery. The assembly and the turntable are coaxially aligned with and relatively rotating about a longitudinally advancing, mandrelled hose. The wires are being directed to the hose by the preforming assembly so that the hose pulls the wires with uniform equal tension and causes them to be simultaneously wrapped thereon in side-by-side parallel helical convolutions. The wire is directed in a helical path around the surface of a preforming tube of the assembly and is bent toward the hose as it is being wound thereon. The bending imparts a characteristic to the wire which causes it to naturally retain the desired helical shape around the hose.
