    • The variable inertia flywheel is a wheel on an axle with a toroidal hollow tubular rim that is completely filled with a fluid. The tubular rim contains one of more one-way valves that allow the fluid to pass in the opposite direction of rotation. When torque is applied to the axle the wheel accelerates but the fluid lags in acceleration. The wheel has two components of inertia, the solid material of wheel and the fluid. The fluid lag lowers the effective moment of inertia of the total system compared to a solid flywheel of the same mass. After a period of time the fluid acquires the same speed as the wheel. The one way valves close on deceleration. The wheel now operates as a solid flywheel of the same total mass to deliver energy to the load.

    • An arrangement for supplying power to a system includes a first electric drive unit constructed to supply mechanical power to or receive mechanical power from a first coupled system of machines and a second electric drive unit constructed to supply mechanical power to or receive mechanical power from a second coupled system of machines.     • A flywheel assembly is provided which comprises a housing, a flywheel rotatably mounted in the housing and defining an inner and an outer circumferential surface, and an inner body spaced radially and inwardly from the inner circumferential surface of the flywheel. The flywheel rotates in use around and relative to the inner body, the assembly defines an engagement surface spaced radially and outwardly from the outer circumferential surface of the flywheel, and the inner body is flexibly coupled to the housing. If the flywheel mounting fails during rotation at speed leading to displacement of the flywheel, flexure of the coupling as a result of forces exerted on the inner body by the displaced flywheel allows the flywheel to contact the engagement surface.

    • In accordance with the present invention, a portable wave-swash & coastal-wind energy harvester, once placed on a sea coast in the swash zone captures the mechanical energy contained in: (a) waves in the swash-zone, and (b) coastal-wind. Energy is extracted through: (a) wave turbines, (b) wind turbines, and (c) wave floats. A rotational transmission system with one-way clutches transmits torque to an alternator, while flywheels attached to the axles maintain steady rotation of axles. A wave funnel faces the waves and causes the wave uprush to converge toward wave turbines. A buoyancy chamber at the bottom produces reduction of weight of the portable wave-swash & coastal-wind energy harvester when water in the chamber is emptied and thereby enhances maneuverability of the unit on land and in water, while a stabilization tank at the top when filled with water provides extra weight and stability of the unit in its operating location.
