    • An improved system for identifying and compacting text data to be transmitted over communications lines and thereby reducing the data volume and transmission time. Transmitting and receiving text processing systems are provided identical library memories containing words commonly used in correspondence. Each word in a document to be communicated is compared to the transmitting system's word library and, if found in the library, only the library address is transmitted. If the word is not found in the library, then it is added to the transmitting system's library, sent, and added to the receiving system's library. The receiving system reconstructs the document by using the received addresses to access the appropriate words from its library and place them in the document. The system combines this word match encoding with character match encoding and facsimile run length encoding for communicating words not found in the system library. The character match process requires a template match and non-linear difference code summation combined with N-dimensional weighting using prestored feature vectors for statistically determining the match between an input character and characters stored in the system library.

    • Disclosed herein is a data compression system for compressing binary facsimile data to reduce transmission times over standard telephone system circuits. At the transmit end of the circuit a segment of adjacent scans of, e.g., a white or light background document having, e.g., black typewritten characters or other symbols thereon is stored in a binary format in a buffer memory. A scanner scans the memory to locate the position of a beginning point of each individual character. A block definer circuit then defines a rectangular block closely enclosing the character. A block mapping circuit then scans the block following a predetermined pattern and provides a binary sequence of the black and white portions thereof. A run length encoder may then encode the binary sequence by run length or by Huffman code. A modem connected to the telephone lines sends data corresponding to the location, size and contents of each character block to a receiving modem at the receive end of the telephone circuit.

    • A method of compressing and decompressing digital data that is especially suitable for halftoned image data in which every bit represents the marking of a receiving material by ink or toner is provided. The method is lossless and balances the use of memory, the processing time, the compression factor and the cost of hardware resources. The recurrence of data in halftoned images on which the smaller data size of the compressed data is based, is caused by the use of a halftone dither matrix. Various halftone dither matrices may be used in the halftoned image. The method is adapted to employ the characteristics of a specific halftone dither matrix by applying a dynamic set of offset values, in which an offset value represents a number of words between the current word of digital data and an identical, previously processed word.

    • A method for encoding a text image. In one embodiment the method comprises determining a background color of an image; dividing the image into text pixels and background pixels, each of the background pixels comprising the background color; determining a text color based on colors of the text pixels; determining a text attribute comprising a luminance profile describing a contour of luminance of a set of the text pixels; generating a binary text mask based on position and luminance of each of the text pixels and the luminance profile; and generating, by a computer, an encoded image comprising the background color, the text color, the binary text mask, and the text attribute.
