    • The present invention is a dramatically enhanced RF link for low-data-rate applications (1-100 bps), using one or more transmitters to communicate with one or more receivers, at dramatically enhanced ranges. The receiver of the present invention can rapidly search, detect, and lock in on narrow band signal transmissions, that may be present in a much larger frequency band and which may be changing frequency during the duration of the message. These receivers enable ultra-low noise floor detection of longer range, more highly attenuated, signal transmissions, by decreasing the receiver bandwidth.

    • Techniques for sending signaling messages in a wireless communication network are described. In an aspect, a signaling message (e.g., a reduce interference request) may be sent by mapping it to at least one specific subcarrier among a set of subcarriers reserved for sending the signaling message. The at least one subcarrier may be selected based on the message value. A signal may be sent on the at least one subcarrier in multiple symbol periods to convey the signaling message. In another aspect, a reduce interference request may be sent based on an orthogonal resource among orthogonal resources available for sending reduce interference requests. In one design, an orthogonal sequence may be selected based on the request and may be spread across a resource segment. In another design, the reduce interference request may be processed to obtain modulation symbols, and each modulation symbol may be spread across multiple subcarriers in one symbol period.

    • In one aspect, a data communication system includes a modulator, an integrated acoustic data coupler, and a demodulator. The modulator modulates a carrier signal having a frequency in an operating frequency range in response to an input data signal and provides the modulated carrier signal at a modulator output. The integrated acoustic data coupler includes an acoustically resonant structure that has one or more acoustic resonant frequencies in the operating frequency range. The acoustically resonant structure includes a first thin film electro-acoustic transducer electrically coupled to the modulator output, a second thin film electro-acoustic transducer, and a substrate.
