    • A method for playing a song of a particular musical style is disclosed. Program instructions are executed, and one or more music composition algorithms are applied to song data in accordance with a song data structure to generate music output for the song. A plurality of levels of predetermined musical styles are determined, and values of one or more parameters in accordance with the song data structure are limited to predetermined ranges corresponding to the particular musical style. A first user input is received for selecting a particular musical style. A second user input is received for one or more musical components, and music characteristics in accordance with the song data structure corresponding to the musical components are modified in accordance with the user input, and the user input modifies the values of one or more parameters within the predetermined ranges. In response to the user input a modified song may be created based on user modifications to the music characteristics. The user input for selecting a particular style may select a level of a particular musical style, and the predetermined ranges for a particular musical style at a first level of musical style may provide a greater range for modifying the musical characteristics as compared to the particular musical style at a second level of musical style. The user input also may modify music output corresponding to one or a plurality of instruments, audio samples or microphone input. The modified song may be stored for subsequent playback and/or played in real time as a live performance.

    • Systems and methods for creating, modifying, interacting with and playing music are provided, particularly systems and methods employing a top-down process, where the user is provided with a musical composition that may be modified and interacted with and played and/or stored (for later play). The system preferably is provided in a handheld form factor, and a graphical display is provided to display status information, graphical representations of musical lanes or components which preferably vary in shape as musical parameters and the like are changed for particular instruments or musical components such as a microphone input or audio samples. An interactive auto-composition process preferably is utilized that employs musical rules and preferably a pseudo random number generator, which may also incorporate randomness introduced by timing of user input or the like, the user may then quickly begin creating desirable music in accordance with one or a variety of musical styles, with the user modifying the auto-composed (or previously created) musical composition, either for a real time performance and/or for storing and subsequent playback. The graphic information preferably is customizable by a user, such as by way of a companion software program, which preferably runs on a PC and is coupled to the system via an interface such as a USB port. A modified MIDI representation of music is employed, preferably, for example, in which musical rule information is embedded in MIDI pitch data, and in which sound samples may be synchronized with MIDI events in a desirable and more optimum manner. The system architecture preferably includes a microprocessor for controlling the overall system operation. A synthesizer/DSP preferably is provided in order to generate audio streams. Non-volatile memory preferably is provided for storing sound banks. Preferably removable non-volatile storage/memory is provided to store configuration files, song lists and samples, and optionally sound bank optimization or sound bank data. A codec preferably is provided for receiving microphone input and for providing audio output. A radio tuner preferably is provided so that output from the radio tuner may be mixed, for example, with auto-composed songs created by the system, which preferably includes a virtual radio mode of operation.

    • Systems and methods for creating, modifying, interacting with and playing music are provided, particularly systems and methods employing a top-down process, where the user is provided with a musical composition that may be modified and interacted with and played and/or stored (for later play). By incorporating the music generation process into a node/subscriber unit, the bandwidth-intensive systems of conventional techniques can be avoided. Consequently, the bandwidth can preferably be also used for additional features such as node-to-node and node-to-base music data transmission. The present invention is characterized by the broadcast of relatively small data files that contain various parameters sufficient to describe the music to the node/subscriber music generator.

    • A method of playing music using a computing system in which MIDI events are synchronized with samples is disclosed. A sequence of MIDI events is provided. At least one of the MIDI events includes delta time parameter data, and the MIDI events are provided to a digital signal processing resource. Audio stream events are processed, and one or more of the audio stream events has associated therewith audio sample data, and the audio sample data is provided to the digital signal processing resource; the audio sample data is not provided from a MIDI sound bank. A first MIDI event is provided that is configured to include delta time parameter data associated with the intended playback timing of at least one audio stream event. The audio stream event is rhythmically synchronized with the sequence of MIDI events using the first MIDI event. The first MIDI event may be an NRPN MIDI command. The audio sample data may be decoded before the audio sample data is provided to the digital signal processing resource, and as a first step the audio sample data may be encoded in a compressed audio format. The digital signal processing resource may consist of a first section associated with the MIDI events and a second section associated with the audio stream data. The audio stream data may be preloaded using a second MIDI event associated with an earlier point in time in the music than the first MIDI event. The second MIDI event may be processed in response to user input.

    • An interactive music playback device includes a sequencer for processing audio information corresponding to a song or other selected piece of music. The audio information may be retrieved from a PCMCIA card or other suitable solid state data storage cartridge which is inserted in a slot in the playback device. The sequencer arranges the audio information in a playback sequence based on one or more user-specified playback parameters, such as tempo, key and playback duration. Voice and instrument synthesizers receive the playback sequence and generate therefrom respective vocal and instrumental portions of the selected piece of music. The playback device may operate in a verse-shuffle mode of operation, in which the sequencer arranges the playback sequence to include randomly-selected verses of the selected piece of music interspersed with a chorus of the selected piece of music. The parameters of the playback sequence may also be varied in accordance with measures of external conditions as received from one or more environmental sensors. The playback device may also include a network connection for use in downloading the audio information from a network to the playback device.
