    • A guided-wave optical branching device having optical waveguides disposed on a substrate. The waveguides are partially arranged to be close to each other to form a tapered directional coupler in which the waveguides are point symmetrical or line symmetrical. Alternatively, the waveguides are neither line symmetrical nor point symmetrical. The tapered directional coupler reduces the wavelength dependence of the coupling ratio of the output power derived from the branching device. The widths of the waveguides in the parallel coupling region, the length of the coupling region in the symmetrical or asymmetrical directional coupler, the asymmetrical parameters or the like are set at values determined in accordance with the wavelength range used, so that the wavelength dependence of the coupling ratio of the power between the input port and the output port is reduced in a desired wavelength range, for example, 1.2 .mu.m-1.8 .mu.m.

    • An interferometric fibre optic network includes a downlead optical fibre (12) and a pair of uplead optical fibres (14, 16). Sites for a plurality of interferometric sensor pairs (25) are arranged whereby each pair (25) is optically connected in use of the network to the downlead and uplead fibers (12, 14, 16) via a 3.times.3 fibre optic coupler (30) and respective further fibre optic couplers (32) on the uplead fibres (14, 16). The uplead fibres (14, 16) are multimode optical fibres, and each of the 3.times.3 couplers (30) is optically connected to the respective further couplers (32) by a single mode optical fibre (34). The further couplers (32) are asymmetric couplers having high tap-on coupling from the single mode optical fibre (34) to the respective uplead fibre (14, 16) but low tap-off coupling from the uplead fibre (14, 16).

    • A fiber optic telemetry system includes an input coupler having a terminal connected to the input of the telemetry system. An output coupler has one of its terminals connected to the output of the telemetry system. A first interferometer or sensor has its input terminal connected to the output terminal of the input coupler, and has its output terminal connected to the output coupler. A third coupler has one of its input terminals connected to the second output of the input coupler, and has a second input terminal connected to the second input of the output coupler. Second and third sensors have their input terminals connected to the output terminals of the third coupler.
